SUBJECT: Full-Time Postdoctoral Research Associates FLSA Salary Threshold Update
Summary
The second phase increase of the salary threshold to remain overtime-exempt under FLSA is effective January 1, 2025, affecting all US employers. Affected employees who are currently overtime-exempt and under the new threshold ($58,656/year or $1,128/week) must either be raised to the threshold or become overtime eligible in the payroll period of the effective date.
As with the smaller initial phase increase July 1, 2024, units need to determine the recommended decision for their employees based on funding and other operational needs.
Full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates
It is important to note that the campus decision for full-time Post-Doctoral Research Associates remains that full-time Post-doctoral Research Associates salaries under the new FLSA salary threshold will be increased to the $58,656 FLSA salary minimum to maintain FLSA exempt status, which allows salaried compensation without overtime hours consideration. You may remember that the policy decision to ensure full-time Postdoctoral Research Associates remain salaried and exempt from overtime was announced via DDDH in April 2024 by Susan Martinis, Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation and Bill Bernhard, Executive Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.
We ask that you do not communicate this information to postdoctoral research associates at this time as it is possible for legal challenges to affect implementation. Communication will be managed centrally by IHR as part of the overall university FLSA implementation project at the appropriate time.
