Dear Colleagues,
This communication is particularly applicable to university personnel who engage with individuals and/or conduct research located in mainland China.
We have recently updated the University of Illinois System’s guidance related to China’s Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL). This refreshed content clarifies when PIPL may apply to university activities and provides practical, role‑based examples to help faculty, staff, and researchers recognize situations that may carry institutional and individual risk.
As a reminder, PIPL can apply to certain teaching, research, administrative, and technical activities involving personal information of individuals physically located in mainland China, even when those activities occur outside China. Non‑compliance may result in significant consequences for both the institution and individuals, making awareness and early consultation critical.
We ask you please share this updated guidance information with your faculty, staff, and researchers.
Helping ensure this information reaches the appropriate audience will support informed decision‑making and reduce risk.
Thank you for your partnership in promoting privacy awareness and compliance across the system.
Sincerely,
The PIPL Privacy Task Force
