Dear colleagues,
The University of Illinois System HIPAA Office was established in 2017 to support all units across the three universities, system offices, and the University of Illinois Hospital and Health Sciences System that make up the HIPAA hybrid entity.
We have three recent changes to share with you.
- The office now reports to the U of I System Digital Risk Office within the Office of the Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs. This change better aligns the office with the system’s risk management approach.
- The U of I HIPAA Privacy and Security Official role has been made into a dedicated position.
- On September 18, Stefan Wahe joined the HIPAA Office and will serve as the HIPAA Privacy and Security Official.
Stefan brings more than 20 years of information security, privacy, and risk management experience within higher education to the HIPAA Office, and we are excited to have him on board. Over the next few months, Stefan will be engaging with individuals and groups from across the organization to gather feedback on how the HIPAA Office can support the organization.
Prior to Stefan’s start, the HIPAA role was held by Matthew Riley, UIC’s Chief Information Officer (CIO). With this change, Matt will continue to focus his time as CIO. On behalf of the entire organization, we want to thank Matt for his time supporting our HIPAA efforts.
Please join us in welcoming Stefan. If you have any questions about the HIPAA Office, please refer to https://hipaa.uillinois.edu/ or contact Stefan, stefanw@uillinois.edu.
Sincerely,
Nicholas P. Jones
Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs
