I am pleased to announce that Dr. Cathy Murphy, the Larry R. Faulkner Endowed Chair in Chemistry and Head of the Department of Chemistry, will become the interim director of the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology on August 16, when current director Nadya Mason steps down.
Dr. Murphy is a highly regarded scientist and experienced administrator, and I know she will provide steady, visionary leadership during this time of transition. In addition to leading one of the university’s largest and most prestigious departments, she is also an active researcher herself, working at the interface of materials chemistry, inorganic chemistry, biophysical chemistry, and nanotechnology.
The Beckman Institute is one of the true gems of the Illinois research enterprise and its trademark brand of barrier-breaking research is absolutely thriving. I have every confidence that Dr. Murphy will maintain the Institute’s momentum as we conduct a national search for a new director. She has committed to serving as interim until August 15, 2024.
Please join me in welcoming Cathy to the Beckman Institute.
Sincerely,
Susan A. Martinis
Vice Chancellor for Research and Innovation
