Why 2FA?
It drastically reduces the number of compromised accounts. It drastically reduces the damage caused by compromised accounts.Using 2FA will help the university maintain our competitive standing in regards to securing research and student data. It already has become industry standard and common practice among our Big Ten peers. Some federal research grants are referencing data protection standards such as NIST-171 and NIST-800-63B which include 2FA as a part of their definitions. We are the stewards of student data including personal identifiable information, health, illness and disability information, and academic records. We need to protect this data just as we would want banks, health centers, and other institutions to protect our own personal information.
What if I don’t have cellular or WiFi access when I login?
The DUO mobile app, available for Apple and Android devices, works without any connectivity. You can replace your SIM card, change providers, turn on airplane mode, or travel internationally and the Duo mobile app works. The common “Push” prompt won’t be available, but the app works by generating a short six-digit code that you type into the web application prompt.
What if I’m locked out?The UI Verify interface (https://verify.uillinois.edu) allows you to set a recovery email address. It is recommend that you set this to facilitate recovery. Temporary codes can be sent here in the event your phone is lost or you are otherwise unable to use your normal 2FA device. What if I need to enroll from off campus?
The UI Verify interface (https://verify.uillinois.edu) supports enrollment from off-campus if you have previously specified a secondary email account with the university. Contact consult@illinois.edu or 217-244-7000 for additional help with enrolling from off campus.
More information about 2FA and answers to common questions are available on the project page: https://go.illinois.edu/2fa or in the help section of https://verify.uillinois.edu. Thank you for helping to better secure important university and personal data.
