Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that Professor May Berenbaum has accepted the position of Director of the Center for Advanced Study (CAS), pending approval by the Board of Trustees. Her appointment began on April 1, 2021.
Professor Berenbaum is a Professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Biology. She has been a member of the Illinois faculty for more than 40 years and has served as Department Head for the Department of Entomology since 1992. She is a Swanlund Endowed Chair, and she has been honored with many awards and accolades including the National Medal of Science.
As the Director of CAS, Professor Berenbaum will be responsible for articulating and promoting the Center’s mission, while fostering and supporting a diverse community of CAS Professors, Fellows and Associates. She will also work to ensure all CAS activities are supportive of excellence throughout campus and will continue to integrate activities supported by CAS with those supported by academic colleges and institutes.
I am confident that Professor Berenbaum’s knowledge of our university and her passion for its impact and its promise will serve us well in her leadership of CAS. I am grateful she has agreed to lead in this new position, and I hope you will all help me welcome her into this new role.
