CONFIDENTIAL
Dear Deans, Directors, and Department Heads:
I’m writing to invite you to submit confidential nominations of distinguished faculty for permanent appointment in the Center for Advanced Study (CAS). As you very likely know, appointment as a CAS Professor is among the highest honors our campus can bestow on its current faculty. Senior faculty who are nominated should represent the highest level of scholarly achievement within their discipline. For faculty in science and engineering, elected membership in a relevant national academy is definitely among the criteria for consideration as a CAS Professor. For faculty in the humanities, social sciences and the arts, nominees should have received highly competitive and prestigious national or international grants and awards (for example, American Council of Learned Societies, American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Guggenheim Foundation Fellowship). For a listing of current and former CAS Professors, please consult our website.
Nomination for CAS Professorship is a two-stage process. At this first stage, you can just provide the names of faculty you would like to nominate, a brief statement (1-2 paragraphs) justifying the nominations, and a 2-page CV (highlights of major accomplishments and awards only) for each. The current CAS Professors will meet towards the end of the semester to consider all submitted nominations and will select the nominees to be advanced to the second stage of the selection process. At that stage, for each of your successful nominees, you will be asked to submit a full-length letter of nomination, along with a detailed CV, and a list of possible external evaluators.
Please note that all stages of the election process (including preliminary nomination) should be treated with the highest degree of confidentiality; nominees should not be informed that they are under consideration.
Please send your list of potential nominees to CAS Deputy Director Masumi Iriye by email (iriye@illinois.edu) no later than March 31, with subject line: “Confidential: CAS Professor Nomination."
I appreciate your assistance with this important process and look forward to the opportunity to recognize and honor our most distinguished faculty, who contribute so materially to the scholarly climate of our campus. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Best regards,
May Berenbaum
