Dear Colleagues,
On Thursday, January 30, the U.S. Department of State elevated its travel advisory to China to “Level 4: Do Not Travel.” This is the highest level alert and it is issued due to the continuing risks created by the spread of the coronavirus.
In response to this most serious advisory, no faculty, staff or student travel to China on university business or using university resources will be allowed without prior authorization and approval by the Vice Provost for International Affairs and Global Strategies Reitumetse Mabokela. This restriction is being implemented to ensure the safety of our university faculty, staff and students and is in accordance with the Campus Administrative Manual policy on international travel. This restriction will remain in effect as long as the Level 4 advisory is in place.
These new limitations are in addition to the suspension of academic programs in China for the 2020 semester that was announced last week.
Faculty, staff or students requesting an exemption from this restriction during this period should contact International Safety and Security by email at safetyabroad@illinois.edu for instructions on how to proceed.
Faculty, students and staff with other questions or concerns about travel plans or the earlier suspension of academic programs in China should contact International Safety and Security at safetyabroad@illinois.edu or call 217-333-6104.
Thank you for your cooperation in implementing this temporary review process into your unit’s operations and I ask you to share this information with your faculty and staff.
Sincerely,
Andreas C. Cangellaris
Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs and Provost
