Dear colleagues,
With the imminent retirement of Enterprise Risk Management Director Joda Morton, I am pleased to inform you that Joe Barnes, chief digital risk officer for the University of Illinois System, also will assume the role of ERM interim director effective May 1, pending board approval.
In his current role, Barnes handles the challenges related to continuous change and increasing complexity in the U of I System’s operations, technology, and threat environments as they relate to cybersecurity, privacy, compliance, business continuity, and risk management. He serves as an advocate for digital risk management throughout the system and brings more than 27 years of experience.
As ERM interim director, Barnes will ensure a seamless transition and carry forward Morton’s strategic foresight and accomplishments. He will help align ERM strategies with the system’s broader risk appetite, enhance cross-functional collaboration, and drive the maturation of enterprise risk practices. This expanded role will involve close coordination with executive leadership, internal audit, compliance, and business unit leaders to fortify the organization’s risk posture. The interim appointment ensures a seamless transition and reinforces the importance of integrating digital risk considerations into all facets of enterprise risk management.
Barnes will work closely with internal and external groups, including the University Risk Management and Insurance Association (URMIA) and Big Ten ERM Group.
I appreciate Barnes taking on the additional role until a permanent director is in place. The current search is underway. The interim appointment reflects our confidence in his leadership and expertise, and we look forward to the continued strengthening of our risk framework under his guidance.
Sincerely,
Nicholas P. Jones
Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs
