Dear Colleagues –
I am writing to inform you of a new resource developed to assist faculty and units in understanding and communicating about ownership and use of intellectual property when faculty are involved in course development.
When individual faculty members are engaged in the development of new, or the revision of existing, course(s) AND the faculty member is offered extra support to do so, the unit should apprise the faculty members of the University of Illinois General Rules governing the arrangement. This form letter, located under Faculty Rights and Responsibilities on the Office of the Provost website, highlights the relevant parts of the General Rules governing ownership and use of intellectual property. Specifically, this letter is appropriate when a faculty member will create traditional academic copyrightable works with university resources over and above those usually and customarily provided.
The full policy can be found in Article III of the University of Illinois General Rules Concerning University Organization and Procedure.
If you have further questions, please contact provost@illinois.edu.
Sincerely,
John Coleman
Provost and Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs
