Dear colleagues,
Bike at Illinois collaborates with several campus and community groups to coordinate bicycle programs and infrastructure throughout the area. Due to the pandemic, we were unable to host Bike to Work Day in May (typically designated Bike Month) 2020 or 2021, so we are combining it with Light the Night on Tuesday, September 14, 2021, and designating it as Bike Day!
Please share this information about next Tuesday’s Bike Day events with your students, faculty, and staff, and encourage them to participate.
Bike to Work Day is scheduled from 7 – 10 a.m. on September 14, at 17 locations in Champaign County, including nine on campus. Attendees will meet us and other bicyclists in the community to celebrate Bike to Work Day! They can grab a snack, get some Bike at Illinois merchandise, including a free T-shirt, and consider donating to the Bike Fund to support bicycles in the community! You must register for Bike to Work Day 2021 by September 13th to get the t-shirt!
Light the Night is scheduled from 4 – 7 p.m. on September 14, at three locations on campus – Alma Mater, Hallene Gateway, and Campus Bike Center. Attendees are required to bring their bicycles for the free installation. The volunteers will follow health and safety guidelines by the University. If you would like to volunteer for this event, please fill out the Volunteer Sign-Up Form.
The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign achieved the Silver Bicycle Friendly University status in October 2019. The Illinois Climate Action Plan 2020 and the Campus Bicycle Master Plan 2014 set a goal of reaching Gold status by 2027. Over the last year, we have completed several bicycle-related projects that will, hopefully, help us achieve this goal with the 2023 application. Some project highlights include:
Bike Shelter near Flagg Hall: University's first-ever bike shelter installed! Armory Avenue Bike Path: Student course projects led to the upgraded path. National bicycle registration system launched: Over 900 bicycle registrations! Learn more at the Bike at Illinois website Register Your Bike Light the Night: Final numbers from Light the Night 2020 Bicycle Census counted parked bikes on campus: Bicycle Census spring 2021
We greatly appreciate your support for Bike at Illinois, and I encourage you to support these events.
Thank you very much,
Dr. Ehab Kamarah
