  • Fall 2025 Auditions

    INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre will be holding auditions for Fall 2025.

    Thursday, May 1, 5-6 p.m.
    Tuesday, May 6, 5-7 p.m.

    Auditions will be held in the Armory Free Theatre (160 Armory)
    Auditions may also be scheduled via a Zoom appointment.

    For questions or to schedule an alternative audition time, please contact Lisa Fay at innervoices@illinois.edu.

    • Open to all university students. Though useful, no previous experience is required.
    • Come with a prepared 1 to 2-minute monologue. (It doesn’t have to be memorized.)
    • Students can elect to receive 2 hours of course credit: Theatre 400M.
  • Fall 2025 Classes

    Here are the courses that will be offered in fall that are connected to INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre,

    Intro to Social Issues Theatre (THEA 218/GWS 218)
    An introductory exploration/survey of community-based and social issues in theatre's rich histories, theories, and practices. Lively connection of social issues in today’s world through discussion, participation, lecture, and performance!

    Leading Post-Performance Dialog (THEA 417/GWS 417)

    Arts engagement exploration and the dramaturge in social issues theatre. Includes hands-on experience of animateur (facilitation) work with INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre. This is a great class for those who want to use theatre in their work (social workers, educators, and other community-focused practitioners).

    Devising Social Issues Theatre (THEA 417/GWS 418)

    Focus on writing and devising theatre explicitly concerned with social issues in the community context. Works created in this course often go on to be performed by the ensemble.

    INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre Ensemble (THEA 400M)

    The focus of the ensemble is public performances. Open to all students. While past experience is useful, it is not necessary. Students may choose to receive credit for their participation in the ensemble.

  • Changing the Narrative: Scenes to Start a Conversation Around Suicide Prevention

    Join INNER VOICES Social Issues Theatre for Changing the Narrative: Scenes to start a conversation around suicide prevention. A discussion follows the performance. 

    The performances are March 10, 11, and 12. All shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and are in the Armory Free Theatre (Room 160 Armory). 

  • INNER VOICES Performances of ...To Be Reckoned With. Featuring Playing Down/Playing UP by Toyosi Tejumade-Morgan

    INNER VOICES Social Issues will be performing a collection of pieces that address the legacy of structural racism and how we continue to grapple with it to this day.

    There will be three performances.

    • Thursday, October 17, 8 p.m.
    • Friday, October 18, 5 p.m.
    • Friday, October 18, 8 p.m.

    All performances will be held at the Armory Free Theatre in room 160 of the Armory Building.
