Part two of the conversation will take place on Wednesday, September 21 from noon to 1 pm in Student Center East (Room 605) and will be an open forum that will provide more opportunity for conversation and dialogue.

In October, the theme of the conversation will be The Election of 2016: Engagement, Conflict & the Common Good, and I will be providing details regarding time and location shortly.

  • Sustainability Fee: Request for Student Proposals

The Sustainability Fee Advisory Board (SFAB) is currently accepting student proposals for Fall 2016. The Sustainability Fee's goal is to support projects that help to establish a sustainable campus environment. Paid by all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, the Sustainability Fee is $3 per semester.

The Sustainability Fee funds small, short-term projects, subsidizes larger, long-term projects on campus, and helps to fund student travel to sustainability-related conferences. Funding from this fee is administered by the SFAB, which is comprised of undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, as well as faculty and staff. More information can be found here: http://go.uic.edu/sustainabilityfee

Who can apply: All UIC students and student organizations are eligible to apply. If needed, the SFAB will help provide access to campus resources and personnel to approved projects. SFAB can also suggest other entities that may provide funding or additional assistance.

Application process: Students/student groups are required to submit a Letter of Inquiry (LOI) by Monday, September 19, 2016. The LOI allows the SFAB to pre-screen proposals for appropriateness and feasibility. Furthermore, the LOI should provide an approximate project budget, expected completion date, and cost savings, if any. Projects that pass this stage will be invited to prepare a final proposal for consideration by the board. The Letter of Inquiry form can be found here: http://go.uic.edu/letterofinquiry. Following review of LOIs, the board will notify all applicants via email by the end of February if they have been selected to submit a full proposal. Full proposals must be submitted by November 7, 2016. Grantees will be notified by the end of the fall semester. For questions regarding previously funded projects, funding criteria, as well as rules and restrictions, please contact skonin2@uic.edu or visit the website: http://go.uic.edu/sustainabilityfee

  • Peers to Allies Leadership Retreat Registration Opens in July!

The Campus Advocacy Network (CAN) is pleased to announce that registration for the 5th Annual Peers to Allies Leadership Retreat will open in July!

    What is Peers to Allies?

Peers to Allies is a violence prevention program that situates leadership, bystander intervention and social justice education as the cornerstones for student engagement. UIC student leaders attend a three-day camping retreat where they participate in workshops, interactive activities and facilitated dialogues. Through our evidence-based curriculum, leaders develop a deeper self-awareness that increases their ability to recognize signs of interpersonal violence and learn practical bystander intervention skills, all while making meaningful connections with other student leaders from the UIC community. Through several years of assessment we know that Peers to Allies provides measurable results that contribute to making UIC a safer campus for everyone.

    Campus SaVE and Title IX

Peers to Allies is a free opportunity for your office or individuals to receive education and training mandated by the Campus SaVE Act and Title IX. In an attempt to reduce sexual violence on college campuses these two federal mandates recommend that all current students at UIC be offered an opportunity to receive education and training on issues of interpersonal violence. At this retreat students learn to recognize the signs of sexual assault, domestic/dating violence and stalking. They learn valuable leadership and bystander intervention skills that allow them to build a safer UIC for everyone. Our interactive curriculum focuses on leadership development in which students learn tools to create a campus that is free from interpersonal violence. If you are an interested student you can nominate yourself by emailing can.wlrc@gmail.com.

    Event Details

Peers to Allies will take place from Friday, September 16 through Sunday, September 18, 2016 at Camp MacLean in the beautiful woods of Wisconsin. All travel, lodging and trainings are free for any UIC student. For more information about the retreat and to register, please visit peerstoallies.uic.edu.

    Participant Testimonies

The retreat increases students’ understanding of being an ally:

“Not being gay, but supporting someone’s decision to be and participating in their movement as an ally”

    “Being in the privileged group, we can speak openly and ‘on the same level’ with people who share the same privilege and, ideally, [they will] listen to us” {sic}

“I had never shared what I shared and I actually teared up which usually I can control but it felt so good to share a piece of my story and to hear others because it felt inspiring” [sic]

The retreat helps students build relationships with students from different peer groups:

“Hearing people’s testimony… it was amazing to have people open up to others they didn’t know well and to open myself up to others I didn’t know well”

“The most powerful moment was the testimonial because everyone got to really share with one another their experience… getting to know each other because it made me understand the behavior of each person and well most of the people here are survivors and that if they are, why not me?”

  • Climate Survey- Take Survey on Interpersonal Violence

    Dear Honors Students,

Recently you should have received an email regarding the online campus climate survey. Our department supports UICs goals of having a safe and productive educational experience for everyone. If you are comfortable doing so, we encourage you to take this voluntary and anonymous survey at: http://tinyurl.com/UICclimateSurvey

Interpersonal violence affects many of our students and the campus climate survey will help UIC better respond to reports of violence and improve services for survivors by giving the university a clear picture about how violence is experienced by students. The survey will also allow the university to plan prevention efforts to stop violence before it begins. Whether or not you have experienced violence, the university hopes to hear from as many students as possible to find out how well you feel the university responds to violence.

The survey should take about 30 minutes. You will be asked for some basic information about yourself (age, gender, race, relationship status, and the name of your college or university), and questions regarding your experiences with interpersonal violence. Students need to be 18 years of age or older to participate in this research (UIC IRB protocol #2016-0045).

After you complete the survey you will be offered the chance to enter your email into a lottery to win 1 of ninety cash prizes ranging from$20 to $80.  Chances of winning are approximately 1 in 50.

If you have questions about this survey, contact Dr. Paul Schewe, at schewepa@uic.edu.

  • 2016 SISE Applications Now Open

The University of Illinois at Chicago presents the 6th Annual Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy

In partnership with Argonne National Laboratory; Clean Energy Trust; Institute for Sustainability & Energy at Northwestern (Northwestern University); Loyola University; UI LABS; University of Chicago; Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (Illinois Institute of Technology)

    The SISE Program

The Summer Institute on Sustainability and Energy (SISE) is a two-week intensive workshop and lecture series for students and professionals. From August 4-16, a diverse body of participants will engage a broad spectrum of energy and sustainability-related topics through daily presentations, collaborative projects, mentoring activities, site visits, and networking opportunities with leading research institutions and companies in the digital technology and energy sectors. The issues presented will be of interest to scientists, economists, political scientists, urban planners, engineers, architects, and entrepreneurs. Graduates leave as thoughtful and informed global citizens with a firm foundation and expanded network for careers in sustainability, energy, and smart technology and infrastructure.

    2016 Theme: Nexus

Water and energy have long been thought of--and addressed as--two separate issues. With the advent of systems thinking, life cycle assessment, and similar strategies for interdisciplinary analysis, the connection between water and energy has only recently been fully acknowledged. This nexus will be challenged in the coming decades as a result of 1) a growing world population, 2) the need to cultivate more food, 3) a dwindling supply of available water resources, and 4) unforeseen disasters as result of climate change. It is important for energy and sustainability-minded professionals, and all future decision makers, to become fluent in the issues surrounding the nexus, and to work together to implement innovative solutions in the decades to come.SISE will 1) explore the relationship between energy and water with an eye towards environmental and agricultural impacts; 2) explore the the use of water, especially in energy extraction (fracking) and generation; and 3) highlight the role of the grid in energy issues, emphasizing three specific areas: smart grid, storage for the grid, and the distribution of energy. Participants will consider where the United States is to date, potential solutions, and obstacles and opportunities for each path moving forward.

    Now Accepting Applications

Admission into the program is highly competitive, drawing from a national pool of applicants. Participants can expect lodging for the duration of the 2-week program. Many participants will receive partial support for travel costs.Senior-level undergraduates (as of the fall of 2016), graduate students, and professionals working in the fields of sustainability and energy who are living, working, or studying in the United States are eligible to apply. An online application, a resume, and two letters of reference are required. Applications will be accepted through July 1, 2016. More information is provided on the SISE website.
