Professor Rochelle Gutiérrez of the Department of Curriculum & Instruction was interviewed in March by Math Ed Podcast, an online outlet hosted by Samuel Otten, who interviews mathematics education researchers about their background and recent studies.
After discussing her scholarly career in mathematics with Otten, Professor Gutiérrez delved into the equitability of mathematics, saying that people need mathematics, and that the field of mathematics also needs people.
"We need to move beyond this idea of traditional versus reform mathematics and ask ourselves, 'When do we get this critical perspective?'" Gutiérrez said in the podcast. "So much of what we write about in equity still has this deficit view of kids, as if it's all about opening doors or their scores on achievement test, and we never really ask if kids get to be themselves in mathematics classrooms. The more important distinction is critical versus dominant."
