      Acronyms Commonly Used in Illinois EI and ECE (Child Care) Settings (editable)

      EITP has developed a listing of acronyms commonly used in Illinois Early Intervention and Early Childhood Education (child care) settings.  This list is provided as a Microsoft Word document, so it is editable and can be customized to add acronyms used within your profession, local community or CFC.

      Alphabet Soup: Acronyms in Early Intervention

      This PDF developed by NICHY (now, the Center for Parent Information and Resources) provides a little context for the most prominent acronyms in EI along with a listing of common acronyms.

      AUCD Acronym Dictionary (medical, academic)

      Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) provides an acronym dictionary on their website.  The acronym dictionary provides the acronym with a brief explanation and link to websites.

      Glossary and Acronyms from Illinois EI Provider Handbook, Chapter 23

      Chapter 23 of the Provider Handbook (pdf) lists acronyms and terms used by providers working in Early Intervention in Illinois.

      Key Terms in Early Intervention

      The Center for Parent Information and Resources provides a handy reference to early intervention terminology.  This site is geared toward families, and refers often to the Part C federal regulations to help explain consent, rights and services.

      Assistive Technology (AT) Glossary

      It is important for parents to understand the “language” of assistive technology so they can be informed advocates for their child’s technology needs. The following glossary of terms can help parents learn about the kinds of assistive technologies that are available and how they can be used.

      English to Spanish Glossary

      A Spanish glossary of educational terms related to the implementation of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is available online from the U.S. Department of Education's Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP). It was developed to ensure that IDEA terms used in documents for parents are translated in a uniform and comprehensible way across states, geographical regions, and communities of Spanish speakers.

      The Early Intervention Dictionary: A Multidisciplinary Guide to Terminology

      This dictionary includes terminology as it relates to children with developmental disabilities as well as early childhood education.  This resource is available in the Illinois Early Intervention Clearinghouse lending library.

      A Family's Introduction to Early Intervention

      Also available in Spanish: Programa de Intervención Temprana de Illinois: Guía para las familias 

      This is a guidebook that introduces families to early intervention. Among the contents of this booklet, you will find information on the early intervention vision, early intervention principles, a flow chart that explains the process of early intervention, and definitions with their corresponding acronyms when applicable.
