  • How can Illinois better preserve its cultural identities?

    Portrait of Helaine Silverman

After a long career as an archaeologist specializing in pre-Columbian societies of Peru, U. of I. anthropology professor Helaine Silverman expanded her research to consider the ways that communities build identity and attract tourism by embracing their cultural heritage. She stands with “Man and Machines (Abstraction #5),” by artist Paul Kelpe, 1934, oil on canvas. The painting, which reflects many of the themes of her work, is on display in the Kinkead Pavilion Annex at Krannert Art Museum.
