Unfortunately, in the first two weeks of January, several students reported thefts while abroad. We do not want to raise anxiety but a timely reminder of some theft prevention tips might be beneficial.
Basic but effective strategies include:
- Never leave your things unattended in public, even if “only for a second.” You never know if you will be delayed and unfortunately a second is all it takes.
- If dining out, do not place your phone or other valuables on the table.
- Keep valuables secured in a bag with zippers (and locks/clasps if available). Keep the bag in your physical possession and in your eyesight.
- Try to limit valuables that you carry in public; only carry what you need for that trip or day.
- When possible, travel and do things in a group; commit to watching out for each other. Multiple people can better observe what is happening and assist each other.
Even the most diligent person can fall prey to crime. If something is stolen, we recommend:
- If you see the person, never chase them! That places you at risk of physical violence.
- If credit cards are lost, immediately notify your bank(s).
- Report the crime to the police. List everything that was taken. Even if your items are not returned, a police reports assists in understanding the scale and pattern of crime in an area.
- If your passport is lost or stolen, inform the appropriate embassy. Embassies prefer having a police report to document the circumstances.
