The Department of State updated the standing Worldwide Caution on June 22, 2025. The full text reads:
“The conflict between Israel and Iran has resulted in disruptions to travel and periodic closure of airspace across the Middle East. There is the potential for demonstrations against U.S. citizens and interests abroad. The Department of State advises U.S. citizens worldwide to exercise increased caution. Please read carefully our Travel Advisory, country information, and any recent security alerts when planning travel at https://travel.state.gov/content/travel/en/international-travel/International-Travel-Country-Information-Pages.html.”
At this time, the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is not changing travel guidance due to the Worldwide Caution.
- The Worldwide Caution encourages travelers to “exercise increased caution.” This is the same designation as Travel Advisory Level 2, which applies to many countries visited by university travelers on a daily basis.
- Department of States describes “exercise increased caution” as: “Be aware of heightened risks to safety and security. … Conditions in any country may change at any time.” Travelers should review country-specific security information from the Department of State.
- The caution advises of disruptions to travel and airspace closures in the Middle East. The caution also advises of the potential for demonstrations against U.S. citizens and interests.
Travelers are encouraged to monitor their flight status, enroll in the Department of State Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP), and follow safety best practices related to protests while abroad. See our previous post for protest safety tips.
