As you begin your experience abroad, the International Safety and Security team would like to share some health and safety best practices and resources.
- Petty Crime. Pickpocketing, snatch and grabs, and other thefts are common worldwide, including in many study abroad locations. Learn more about how to lessen your chances of being a target and stay one step ahead of street criminals by watching our new Avoiding Petty Crime Abroad video.
- Protecting Personal Property. When living abroad, you are likely to bring valuable items (laptops, smartphones, jewelry, eyeglasses, etc.) that may be costly to replace. Unfortunately, residential break-ins or luggage theft at airports, transit hubs, and other crowded public places do occur. The university’s international insurance provides limited coverage for personal property ($250 maximum with conditions). You are encouraged to consider additional personal property insurance. Information on optional insurance products can be found on the safety abroad website. (You may also want to check if you or your family have coverage through a homeowner’s or renter’s policy.)
- Adjusting to Life Abroad and Taking Care of Yourself. Studying abroad is an exciting and enriching experience but it can also be stressful as you navigate an unfamiliar environment. Culture shock is normal, as is missing family, friends, and other familiar aspects of your life. If you feel you are struggling to adjust to life abroad and it is affecting your mental or physical well-being, there are resources available to help you.
- Maintain (or adopt) self-care practices to manage stress and promote well-being.
- We encourage “thinking local first.” If you are comfortable doing so, talk to local program staff who have experience helping students adjust to life in a new country.
- You can make an in-person or tele-health appointment with a mental health counselor through the international insurance.
