Playa del Carmen, south of Cancun
As members of the University of Illinois community prepare for travel around spring break, International Safety & Security wants to inform potential travelers to the Cancun area of Mexico of an Embassy Security Alert issued on March 7, 2018 for Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico. Playa del Carmen is a resort town approximately 45 miles south of Cancun.
Given the local situation, the Embassy is not allowing its employees to travel to Playa del Carmen and has closed the Consular Agency there until further notice. Americans traveling to Mexico are encouraged to follow the Embassy’s lead, but may travel to Playa del Carmen if they chose to do so. More information, including travel advice and assistance, can be found in the Playa del Carmen Security Alert on the U.S. Embassy & Consulates in Mexico website.
