  • Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 10 to August 2, 2019, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned up to 10 credits, you will have had fun!

For more information, visit our website at https://linguistics.illinois.edu/languages/summer-institute-languages-muslim-world.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu or reach out to Brennan Dell (dell3@illinois.edu).  We hope to see you this summer!

  • Suit Up Event

The Career Center is currently collaborating with both Parkland Community College and JC Penney to put on a fantastic event called Suit-Up for students on March 31, 2019 from 5 to 9 p.m. at the JC Penney located in the Market Place Shopping Center in Champaign, IL. This event will allow students and their families who attend to purchase select business professional attire and receive an additional 40% off ticket prices (including already marked down items). This discount applies to professional dress apparel, shoes, and some accessories and undergarments. Last Spring The Career Center saw over 450 unique students visiting our Career Closet in search of interview and new job attire. After noticing this need, we felt confident this event would serve our student population and their families well.

We will have transportation available for students from campus to JC Penney the evening of the event. More details regarding transportation will be coming soon. Please check Handshake for updates, and encourage students to do the same. All students need to do to participate is bring their student ID to check-in as well as any family members they may like to join them -  everyone will received the additional 40% off select professional attire.

  • MDA Summer Camp Volunteer Opportunity

As part of MDA’s mission to transform the lives of people affected by neuromuscular disease, MDA Summer Camp gives kids ages 8-17 the freedom to be kids with others who are just like them during a life-changing week of fun and friendship — all at no cost to their families. Summer Camp opens a world of possibilities to kids with neuromuscular diseases who often experience limitations in life and daily activities. Kids call Summer Camp the “best week of the year.”

Locally, we are recruiting volunteers to support the MDA Summer Camp of Illinois program taking place at the Timber Pointe Outdoor Center in Hudson, IL from Saturday, July 6th – Friday, July 12th. MDA relies on the support and dedication of volunteers who are by campers’ sides day and night so that they can do all the fun activities that camp offers such as zip-lining, horseback riding, swimming, fishing, and more. Volunteers will participate in activities with the campers, push wheelchairs, lift and transfer kids, assist with daily living tasks, and have fun!

Our camp program is overnight, and we need volunteers to commit to being on site the entire week. MDA provides pre-camp training to all volunteers, and all meals and lodging are provided. We award 144 service hours for the week, and it is a great way for students to enhance their resumes and help make them stronger candidates when applying for scholarships, graduate school, internships, and employment. More importantly, camp will enrich students’ lives and inspire them in ways they never dreamed possible.

To apply to be an MDA Summer Camp volunteer students can visit https://www.mda.org/summer-camp/volunteer.

  • City Internships Program

Programs are open to students from any year and with any major, and they may choose a placement in one of 9 career fields: Banking & Financial services; Consulting & Professional services; Law & Politics; Technology & Engineering; Marketing, Advertising & PR; Media, Entertainment & Journalism; Art, Fashion & Design; Start-ups & Entrepreneurship; Charities, NFPs & NGOs.

Programs are available in 9 locations: London, Paris, New York, Miami, Los Angeles, Boston, Washington DC, Chicago, San Francisco.

This year has been the first that we have offered our Student Aid scheme, which grants up to $3,263 to students enrolling in one of our programs. All students are eligible for some aid, but the overwhelming amount of applications we have received means we will be re-assessing our aid contributions at some point during the Spring.

We will endeavour to provide as much support as possible to Students, but sadly it is not an unlimited resource! As such, I would again encourage students who aim to rely on our Student Aid offering to apply sooner rather than later.

    You may apply at: https://city-internships.com/apply

  • Chris Capozziello lecture and panel

Chris Capozziello is an awarded photojournalist who is coming on 2/6 to speak on his life and relationship with his twin brother with a disability. There will also be several other students with disabilities speaking about their experiences and relationships with their non-disabled siblings. I am attaching a blurb highlighting the purpose behind the event, and a flyer. Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!

"Someone once said, "Siblings will take different paths and life may separate them, but they will forever be bonded by having begun their journey in the same boat."   How is this quote lived out among  siblings when one has a disability?  How is the twin relationship impacted when one twin has a disability and the other does not?  Come spend time being part of an event exploring these unique relationships with those who live them!  Chris Capozziello, award winning photojournalist, and University of Illinois students with disabilities will share experiences, thoughts, and feelings as they explore a topic that is seldom discussed.   This event will be a “family” discussion – around the kitchen table with Chris and some of University of Illinois students with disabilities – some who are the twin with a disability and who have a twin without.

Chris is an American photojournalist whose work has been published and exhibited worldwide. Since he first picked up a camera as a teenager, Chris has been drawn to photographing his twin brother Nick, who has cerebral palsy. The time Chris spends looking through his camera at Nick has forced him to ask questions about suffering and faith and why anyone is born with a disability. As family photographs, the images of Nick were not originally made to be shared, but they have since been widely distributed and are the subject of Chris’s first monograph, The Distance Between Us."
