  • Spring 2nd-half semester EPSY 203 Dialogue classes now open

Students may now register for EPSY 203 Dialogue on Social Issues classes for Spring 2020.

These one-credit hour courses focus on different social identity issues, and help prepare students to think more critically and interact more successfully in socially diverse groups and settings. They are experiential and collaborative, and support students in understanding the complexity of power, privilege and oppression. They can be very useful for developing clearer communications, small group/team skills, and knowledge about fairness and social justice in organizations and the larger society.

The courses emphasize collaborative sense-making, where students and instructors work together to understand issues associated with intergroup relations. Instead of lectures, the dialogue approach invites learners to share their own experiences and perspectives on issues, in order to create deeper understanding among learners.

    The following courses are available:
    Exploring Race/Ethnicity (Mondays, 1-2:50)
    Liberal/Conservative dialogue (Mondays, 3-4:50)
    Exploring Disability (Mondays, 5-6:50)

Being White in a Multicultural Society (Tuesdays, 6-7:50)

  • Statistics Skills Lab with Dr. Rachel Garthe

    October 9, 2020
    1-3 PM

    Open to all SSW students

    REGISTER TODAY

The Statistics Skills Lab will provide an overview for how students can use statistical concepts and analyses to answer social work practice- or organization-oriented questions. The workshop will look at examples of when to use statistical techniques when working with individual clients, as well as techniques for working with small and large groups. Thus, this workshop is not meant to teach statistical theory or equations, but rather provide a hands-on skills lab to explore the application of statistics in social work. The course will be taught by Dr. Rachel Garthe, Assistant Professor in the School of Social Work. Dr. Garthe has been teaching statistics courses for the last six years and is extensively trained in statistical methods.

The course will begin with a brief recap for students: reviewing how types of variables lead you to select different types or options of statistical analyses. Next, students will have a brief orientation to organizing and preparing data for analysis using Excel. For the rest of the workshop students will be reviewing common statistical techniques that they will likely encounter in the field, with accompanying Excel demonstrations and practice problems. Students will be provided with step-by-step guides, demonstration videos, and practice problems to learn how to use statistics to answer practical social work questions.

  • Summer Class in Chicago-2018! African-American Families in Film AFRO 382/ HDFS 324

This seminar explores African American family life through the use of films as “case studies”. Using classic and contemporary films that depict diverse family structures, social classes, and experiences within African American families, we will examine the internal dynamics of family life. These include family formation patterns, dating-mate selection, couples’ relations, parenting, male-female/gender relations, child, adolescent, and adult development, family routines and practices, family communication, and family stress, coping and resilience. We will also consider how families interact with larger contexts, such as the local neighborhood and key institutions (schools, workplace, social service agencies).  Films will be supplemented with readings from diverse disciplines (African American Studies, Anthropology, Education, Family Studies, Psychology, and Sociology) that allow us to examine substantive, theoretical, and policy issues in the study of African American families.

  • Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages have been designated by the United States government as critical to U.S. National Security and can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 10 to August 2, 2019, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters.
