  • Beinecke Scholarship Informational Events - 11/1 and 11/2

If you are a high-achieving junior and plan to attend graduate school after graduation in the arts, humanities or social sciences, but have concerns about being able to afford it, consider applying for the Beinecke Scholarship.

The Beinecke Foundation is looking for students who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate years. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated U.S. citizen juniors to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Preference is given to candidates for whom the awarding of significant financial aid would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school.

The University of Illinois is one of a select few institutions that may endorse a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship, and the National and International Scholarships Program has planned two sessions to assist students interested in earning this $34,000 award. The campus deadline for nomination is January 22, 2019. Additional information about the award may be found at: http://topscholars.illinois.edu/beinecke

  • Summer Class in Chicago-2018! African-American Families in Film AFRO 382/ HDFS 324

This seminar explores African American family life through the use of films as “case studies”. Using classic and contemporary films that depict diverse family structures, social classes, and experiences within African American families, we will examine the internal dynamics of family life. These include family formation patterns, dating-mate selection, couples’ relations, parenting, male-female/gender relations, child, adolescent, and adult development, family routines and practices, family communication, and family stress, coping and resilience. We will also consider how families interact with larger contexts, such as the local neighborhood and key institutions (schools, workplace, social service agencies).  Films will be supplemented with readings from diverse disciplines (African American Studies, Anthropology, Education, Family Studies, Psychology, and Sociology) that allow us to examine substantive, theoretical, and policy issues in the study of African American families.

  • Speak. Act. Change. this April for Sexual Assault Awareness Month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and we want to work with YOU to end sexual violence. Our 2018 theme of “Speak. Act. Change” was built collaboratively across campus and community partners, declaring that to truly end violence and abuse we must speak and act, in order to create change.

Because everyone deserves to live in a world without violence, we all have a unique role in challenging sexual assault. It is estimated that 1 in 4 or 1 in 5 college women, and 1 in 16 male college students will experience a completed or attempted sexual assault.

This month, take action — attend a rally, workshop, or training — and let’s talk about how we can support survivors and help end sexual violence. We have a host of events planned to support survivors, build healthy relationship skills, and encourage bystanders to intervene in what remains a local, national, and international social problem.

Check out this year's Sexual Assault Awareness Month event calendar below, and stay up to date with new events at http://go.illinois.edu/saam.

Students are invited to be a part of the solution and participate in this year's ICARE Challenge. Every time you attend or request an I Heart Healthy Relationships or ICARE workshop, you will be entered into a raffle for amazing prizes. This year's prizes include free coffee from Espresso Royale, free food from Chipotle, Qdoba, Auntie Anne’s, Cold Stone, and more! Visit bit.ly/icarechallenge for more information.

The Summer Institute for Languages of the Muslim World (SILMW) is an annual intensive language program at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. We invite students to join the 9% of Americans who choose the unique and meaningful experience of learning a Less Commonly Taught Language (LCTL).  We believe that learning these languages will allow students to gain new global perspectives and set them apart as highly qualified individuals for international work and engagement.  Many of these languages can assist students in securing international positions in governmental, development, and academic sectors.

This summer SILMW will take place from June 15 to August 8, 2020, and we will be offering Arabic, Persian, Swahili, Turkish, and Wolof.  The program is 8 weeks and is divided into two, 4-week semesters. This is an immersive experience, complete with instruction, cultural activities, opportunities for language practice, conversation tables, cooking classes, movie nights, and more!

When you complete the program, not only will you be able to hold a conversation in a new language and have earned up to 10 credits, you will have had fun!

For more information, visit our website at https://linguistics.illinois.edu/languages/summer-institute-languages-muslim-world.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us at silmw@illinois.edu or reach out to Giang Le (gianghl2@illinois.edu).  We hope to see you this summer!
