  • Beinecke Scholarship Informational Events - 10/31 &11/1

If you are a high-achieving junior and plan to attend graduate school after graduation in the arts, humanities or social sciences, but have concerns about being able to afford it, consider applying for the Beinecke Scholarship.

The Beinecke Foundation is looking for students who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate years. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated U.S. citizen juniors to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Preference is given to candidates for whom the awarding of significant financial aid would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school.

The University of Illinois is one of a select few institutions that may endorse a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship, and the National and International Scholarships Program has planned two sessions to assist students interested in earning this $34,000 award. The campus deadline for nomination is January 21, 2020. Additional information about the award may be found at: https://topscholars.illinois.edu/beineckebros

  • Information about registering for ASL classes and SHS 222

For Spring 2020, the department is managing enrollment in all three ASL classes, as well as in SHS 222, via a wait list, which is why these courses appear on the class schedule to be noted as closed or restricted. If you have students who are interested in taking any of these classes, please share with them that although registration does not open until November 4, they can go to the Course Explorer website and put themselves on the waitlist now for any of these classes. They will find the link to the URL below each class section’s meeting time, which is as follows:  https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/2162112. (The URL is updated each semester.) Students will be prompted to fill out the online form and should note the specific course and section of the class they are interested in taking.

It is important to also inform students that being placed on the wait list does not guarantee registration in any of these courses but communication about enrolling off the wait list will come from Andrea Paceley (apaceley@illinois.edu) in the SHS office, 217-333-2230.

  • Help us plan Earth Day 2020 activities!

2020 will mark Earth Day’s 50th Anniversary. Since the first Earth Day in 1970, 20 million Americans have volunteered in the planet’s largest civic event leading to the passage of landmark environmental laws in the United States such as the Clean Air, Clean Water, and Endangered Species Acts (Earthday.org). Despite these past successes, today, we face greater environmental challenges that need action at all levels of society. Solving the environmental crises requires multidisciplinary perspectives and applications. Social work discipline endeavors to address injustices for all people and now we recognize that the natural environment is a crucial element in securing justice for current and future generations (Erickson, 2018). The purpose of this committee is to educate and mobilize social work students to grow and support environmental activists through participation in Earth Day 2020. The committee will develop and lead UIUC School of Social Work Earth Day activities.

If you are interested in serving on the committee, please complete the survey at https://uiucsocialwork.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_bHjiK8gXB6tCuMt by Friday, 10/18.
