  • Research Data Access & Preservation Association - Call for Proposals!

    Research Data Access and Preservation Summit (RDAP) invites proposals for its upcoming summit at the University of Miami in Coral Gables, FL on May 15-17, 2019.

    RDAP Summit is a 2-day single-track, affordable event for research data support practitioners, with optional workshops available on a third day for a small additional fee. The program includes panels, lightning talks, a poster session, discussions, and optional workshops. This year’s theme is Building Communities.

    The planning committee encourages presenters to propose topics that address how different communities are impacted by our systems, technology, values, and practices; who our communities are by and for; and to look at data services through a critical lens.

    Once again, RDAP and the Journal of eScience Librarianship (JeSLIB) will continue their partnership. RDAP presenters will have the opportunity to submit papers to a special issue of JeSLIB.

  • IT Pro Forum Registration Open - deadline is 10/18 by 5pm

    The Fall 2018 IT Professionals Forum registration is now open! Please visit the website and register for this #TechnologyTransformers conference. This is a 2-day event on November 7-8, 2018.

    Wednesday, November 7th follows our traditional format, held at the I Hotel and Conference Center located at 1900 S. 1st Street Champaign, IL 61820. Lunch and snacks will be provided.Thursday, November 8th is an optional day filled with workshops at the I Hotel and Conference Center. 

    The deadline to register is 5 PM on Thursday, October 18th.

  • Dark Energy Survey Releases First Year Value-Added Data Products

    The Dark Energy Survey (DES) has made public a large set of value-added data products derived from the images and catalogs processed and generated at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, corresponding to the first year (Y1) of the DES survey. This recent article provides insight into what this new data can provide.

  • Global Effort to Sequence All Complex Life on Earth Launches

    The Earth BioGenome Project (EBP), a global effort to sequence the genetic code, or genomes, of all 1.5 million known animal, plant, protozoan and fungal species on Earth, officially launched on November 1, 2018. The EBP will ultimately create a new foundation for biology to drive solutions for preserving biodiversity and sustaining human societies. 

  • iSEE Offers Research Funding Support

    The Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment (iSEE) is announcing a call for proposals to support interdisciplinary research projects on topics related to sustainability, energy, and environment to promote new research collaborations or enhance existing collaborations among faculty across campus that will improve their potential for attracting external support.

    Proposal deadline is December 3, 2018 by 5pm. iSEE welcomes proposals from all qualified scientists and engineers with extensive experience. The proposal must involve at least two experts from different disciplines and different campus units and is limited to a maximum of $30,000 for a year. More information and proposal guidelines are available. 

  • Seminar: Best Practices for Engaging Military/Veteran Populations in Research, November 28, 12-1pm, 114 Huff

    Does your research apply to Military and/or Veteran communities? This talk is for all researchers who engage with or are interested in engaging with Military/Veteran populations in research. In this hour, Dr. Jeni Hunniecutt, Research Specialist for CHAD and the Center for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education, will overview best practices for collaborating with and recruiting Military Service Members, Veterans, and family members for research.   • Andrew W. Mellon Faculty Fellowship in Legal Humanities

    The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities presents this opportunity to apply for the position of Mellon Faculty Fellow. 

    The IPRH-Mellon Faculty Fellow will serve as the director for the IPRH-Mellon Legal Humanities Research Group, beginning with his or her appointment in spring 2019, and concluding in the 2022–23 academic year. The Faculty Fellow will serve as the primary supervisor for the research group and will report directly to the PI (Antoinette Burton) on all activities pertaining to and funded by the grant.

    Please note that this is an internal fellowship, open only to current University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign tenured professors who possess a Ph.D. in a humanities discipline.

  • IPRH New Horizons Summer Faculty Research Fellowship

    IPRH is now accepting applications for the New Horizons Summer Faculty Research Fellowship. This funding opportunity is designed to help faculty at the tenured Associate Professor level maximize the summer for research at a critical juncture in the arc of their professional careers. 

    New Horizons funding has two components:

    1) Summer Faculty Research Fellowship ($7500)

    2) Undergraduate Research Assistantship in the Humanities ($2500)

    We are currently accepting applications for work to be undertaken in summer 2019. Three fellows will be chosen by an ad hoc committee organized by the IPRH Director.

  • Image of Research Competition - Accepting Submissions!

    Submissions are now being accepted for the Image of Research Competition, which is co-organized by the Grad College and the Library's Scholarly Commons. The competition is open to Illinois graduate and professional students, who are "invited to submit images of their research, creative, or scholarly work for the sixth annual Image of Research competition." Submission deadline is January 22.

  • Nominations Open for Illinois Innovation Prize! $20,000 for a Student Innovator

    Deadline: January 25, 2019

    Nominations are open for the Illinois Innovation Prize through the Technology Entreprenuer Center at the College of Engineering.

    The Illinois Innovation Prize (IIP) for $20,000 is awarded annually to an innovative student working towards solving global and societal challenges with the potential for a significant positive impact on the world.

    Students must be nominated by a faculty member, mentor, advisor and so forth. Students may not nominate other students. Students must be on-campus during the 2018-19 academic year at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

  • Webinar: Introduction to Running Jobs on Comet

    This webinar covers the basics of accessing the SDSC Comet supercomputer, managing the user environment,  compiling and running jobs on Comet, where to run them, and how to run batch jobs. It is assumed that you have mastered the basics skills of logging onto Comet and running basic Unix commands.  The webinar will include access to training material.

    This meeting will use the Zoom conferencing system. You should receive an email with connection details when you register. If you do not have the connection details, please send an email to eot@sdsc.edu

  • Social Media Analytics Summit Success

    The Social Media Analytics Summit (led by the Illinois Data Science Initiative and co-sponsored by Research IT, Technology Services) was a gathering of over 200 registrants that spanned academic research, industry research, social media practitioners, students, and other interested parties. The goal of the summit was to showcase what is happening in the realm of social media analytics both on the Illinois campus and beyond. A researcher from Spredfast (one of the largest social media analytics companies) and the network science group from Indiana University presented on things happening with social media analytics beyond Illinois. The State of Illinois marketing officer was also present to understand what is happening in this realm. It was an incredibly successful summit and hope that this was a springboard for many activities to come within the realm of social media analytics.

  • CSE Fellowship Proposals Available

    Graduate students in participating departments are invited to submit CSE Fellowship Proposals for support of interdisciplinary research in Computational Science and Engineering (CSE). Several awards are expected to be given for the 2018 -2019 academic year which is from August 16, 2018 to July 15, 2019. Proposed research projects must be interdisciplinary, and must be oriented toward computational science and engineering and/or applied mathematics.

  • Campus Champion Publishes CURE Paper

    For the past three years, several course-based undergraduate research experiences, called CUREs, have been led by Campus Champion and Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry Chantal Stieber at California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Cal Poly Pomona). Stieber has served as a Campus Champion since 2016, a program which was founded by XSEDE with the intent to help researcher, educators, and scholars use advanced digital capabilities to improve and accelerate their achievements. Stieber recently teamed with Cal Poly Pomona graduate student Erica Hummel to publish their CURE study findings in the Journal of Computational Science Education.

  • Attend the XSEDE HPC Workshop

    XSEDE along with the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center are pleased to announce a one-day OpenMP workshopTuesday, January 9. This workshop is intended to give C and Fortran programmers a hands-on introduction to OpenMP programming. Attendees will leave with a working knowledge of how to write scalable codes using OpenMP. This event will be presented using the Wide Area Classroom (WAC) training platform.

  • U of I Box Now Offers HIPAA

    U of I Box is now available for storing protected health information. Individuals who would like to use U of I Box to store Protected Health Information may only do so in a provided Box Health Data Folder (BHDF). A request for a BHDF can be submitted from https://hipaa.uillinois.edu/protecting-phi-with-box-health-data-folders. Individuals are responsible for following set policies and guidance listed in the web page above.

  • Call for Proposals: SBSRI Small Grant Program

    The Social and Behavioral Sciences Research Initiative, with support from the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research both directly and via the Campus Research Board, requests proposals for its 2018 Small Grant Program. This program brings together interdisciplinary research teams to develop projects that show promise for external funding. Applications will be accepted until April 28, 2018.

  • Researchers update Illinois standards for storm frequencies

    As heavy rainstorms become more frequent and stronger than in the past, municipal drainage systems designed from outdated standards often fail, resulting in flooding and financial losses.

    Researchers at the Illinois State Water Survey (ISWS) have recently applied newer data to update ISWS Bulletin 70, the publication that provides the state standards for expected extreme storms.

  • 2018 Summer Boot Camp XSEDE Registration Pages Available

    The registration pages for the 2018 Summer Boot Camp event are now available.

    This 4 day event will include MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC and accelerators and run June 4-7. This event will be presented using the Wide Area Classroom(WAC) training platform and will conclude with a special hybrid exercise contest that will challenge the students to apply their skills over the following 3 weeks and be awarded the Fifth Annual XSEDE Summer Boot Camp Championship Trophy.  In addition, an XSEDE Badge will be available to those who complete the Challenge.

  • REU and NCSA SPIN Programs Panel Discussion

    Join Women@NCSA on Wednesday, June 5 from 1:30-2:30pm in the NCSA atrium for a partnering panel discussion from REU and NCSA SPIN programs. This panel aims to discuss opportunities and pathways for women in STEM fields with undergraduate students. The panel will be followed by round table discussions on topics such as women in research, women in STEM, careers for women in research, etc. The event is open to all.     The Call for Proposals is now open for iConference 2020 in Borås, Sweden. The theme is Sustainable Digital Communities and there is a great deal of flexibility in presentation formats, from full papers, to workshops to colloquia. Submission deadlines vary by track, beginning September 16.

    Since the 2008 fiscal year, the National Endowment for the Humanities has approved awards of more than $400 million in grants to nearly 900 American colleges and universities to support projects in areas like education, preservation, research, and digital humanities.

  • Image of Research Competition

    Graduate and professional students at Illinois are invited to submit images of their research, creative or scholarly work for the fifth annual Image of Research competition. Entries will be judged by a multidisciplinary panel for connection between image, text, and research; originality; and visual impact. Deadline is Jan. 22, 2018.

  • A Powerful Supercomputer is Helping Scientists to Understand Epilepsy

    Epilepsy is the fourth most common human neurological disorder in the world — a disorder characterized by recurrent, unprovoked seizures. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a record number of people in the United States have epilepsy: 3.4 million total, including nearly half a million children. At this time, there’s no known cause or cure, but with the help of NCSA’s Blue Waters supercomputer at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, researchers like Ivan Soltesz are making progress.

  • Highlighting Campus Cluster Research

    The Illinois Campus Cluster Program (ICCP) was utilized for processing research done by Professor Jean-Pierre Leburton, a member of the Beckman Institute's Nanoelectronics and Nanomaterial Group. Leburton's work has recently been featured in numerous articles for his work on the future of transistors and the role of nanopores in DNA.

  • Call for Proposals now open for the Women Advance IT Conference

    "Women Advance IT" is an IT leadership conference that will be held at the Nebraska Innovation Campus, 2021 Transformation Dr, Lincoln, NE 68508 on November 5-6, 2019. This two-day conference is open to the public. The final day of registration is October 29, 2019.This year's conference theme is, "Disruption." We want to hear about programs that encourage inclusiveness and continued education in improving diversity and inclusion, growing future leaders and adding more women in IT. This year's Emerging Tech track will focus on STEM, we encourage students to submit proposals on their research projects.

    UC2B, Urbana-Champaign Big Broadband, is a community broadband project that was funded through a federal grant. A non-profit group, UC2B-NFP, oversees the operations of the network service provider and seeks ways to enhance community involvement with an objective of expanding digital literacy. Research IT, in partnership with UC2B-NFP, is building a gig-minded ecosystem that presents opportunities for individuals and organizations to give back to the community with a goal of elevating digital literacy.

    Whole-Tale: Merging Science and Cyberinfrastructure Pathways" is an NSF-funded project that will enable researchers to examine, transform and then seamlessly re-publish research data that was used in an article.

  • Partner Investment in 7 TESLA MRI Impacts Illinois Research, Patient Care

    Carle and University of Illinois leadership recently approved funding to purchase a MAGNETOM 7 Tesla (7T) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. They join an elite network of clinical facilities (currently one of only six nationwide) to offer patients access to this technology, the highest magnetic field imaging strength commercially available in the United States approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for brain and knee scans of patients greater than 66 lbs.
