In response to newly released travel restrictions, International Student and Scholar Services and University Housing are providing the following information to assist individuals if they choose to remain in Champaign-Urbana over the winter break.
For Existing Residents of University Housing
Before Break Housing Deadline
- Any student living in an undergraduate residence hall, who knows they need break housing now, can contract online through Thursday (12/18) morning at 10 a.m. and find more information on the break housing website.
- Students with assignments in Pennsylvania Avenue Residences, Illinois Street Residences, Snyder Hall, Bousfield Hall or Wassaja Hall would complete the contract and be permitted to stay in their current room over break as these locations are considered break housing locations.
- Students with assignments in any other undergrad hall, would contract for break housing and be assigned to a temporary break location in one of the halls listed above. Students would pack a bag with everything they need for the duration of their stay in the temporary break assignment since they will not have access to their permanent assignment during the break period.
- Current residents of Sherman and Daniels Hall have break housing included in their academic year (or 12 month) contract and do not need to complete a break housing contract.
After Break Housing Deadline
- Students living in an undergraduate residence hall who discover they need break housing after 10 a.m. on Thursday, December 18 would proceed, in-person, to the nearest break housing desk during business hours (break housing desks are open 10am – 10pm) in Snyder Hall, Pennsylvania Avenue Residences or Illinois Street Residences.
- The desk will provide a code for students to complete the break housing contract and provide an assignment in one of the locations based on availability at that time.
- Students who are concerned about a disruption in their travel plans could choose to pack a secondary bag, with toiletries, pillow, sheets and other items they would need in break housing but not at home, prior to break so they are prepared should they need additional belongings.
- Current residents of Sherman and Daniels Hall have break housing included in their academic year (or 12 month) contract and do not need to complete a break housing contract.
Students who need assistance after business hours (before or after contracting for break) can contact our 24-desk and be connected to duty staff for assistance by calling 217-333-1651.
Private Certified Housing Residences are privately owned and operated and each have different break housing policies. Some have break nights included in the contract others are not open at all. Residents living in PCH should reach out to the respective management now to make sure they understand their options for staying in their location over breaks. If you have anyone who is stuck without break housing but has an academic year contract with PCH please let us know and we will try to assist (sometimes another PCH location will have a room, they will rent instead).
For Non-University Housing Residents
If you are not a University Housing resident, privately available sublease information can be found on the Illinois Abroad Housing Board.
