People unconsciously make accommodations for poor fit with the environment or blame the occupants for unhealthy behaviors. These poor-fit conditions and the unconscious accommodations and unhealthy behaviors they engender, can increase individual- and population-health vulnerabilities. Environmental designers have a hand in human health outcomes and must help identify and develop interventions that contribute to the battle against chronic and acute mental and physical illnesses.

    UIUC Solar Farm 2.0 is energized!

    The newly completed Solar Farm 2.0 at the northwest corner of First Street and Curtis Road is online! The 54-acre solar array began generating power for the campus earlier this month, with the capability to produce 20,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of solar energy per year.

    Combined with Solar Farm 1.0 on Windsor Road (7,000 MWh/year) and smaller installations, the added capacity pushes the campus beyond the target set in the 2015 Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) to generate 25,000 MWh/year of solar by FY 2025. A wind power-purchase agreement brings the total campus clean energy to 50,000 MWh/year. Solar Farm 2.0 will also feature native plants to support a pollinator habitat!

    Zumwalt Acres is an agroforestry farm practicing methods of agriculture that are regenerative, draw down carbon, and align with Jewish values (but is interfaith). It is about an 1.5 hours from CU that has an apprenticeship program.  I think they provide room and board, with a possibility of a stipend. They mention wanting apprentices with skills including web design, filmmaking and photography and are open to non-listed skills that will benefit the program—perhaps sustainable design. They collaborate with Yale to “engage in cutting-edge climate change mitigation research.”
