  • Graduate Research Assistantship in Environmental Social Sciences and Qualitative Analysis starting in Fall 2026

    The successful applicant will conduct qualitative data analysis based on semi-structured interviews and Net-Maps with coffee farmers in Colombia, focusing on their social interactions (with peers and others) and the implementation of sustainable practices (e.g. agroforestry, soil conservation). They will also support additional research activities related to the project, contribute to the preparation of at least one peer-reviewed article, and collaborate with an international team of scholars based in Australia, Sweden, and Colombia. The selected candidate will pursue the Master of Science in Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences. 

    One of the desired qualifications is Spanish since the data to be analyzed is in Spanish

  • Summer 2025 Scholar, Illinois Climate Jobs Institute (Urbana, IL; due March 28)

    The Illinois Climate Jobs Institute (CJI) is accepting applications from upper level undergraduate and graduate students for our 2025 Summer Scholars Program. Summer scholars will gain research and writing experience at the intersection of clean energy, policy, labor, and workforce development. They will assist with research projects to inform the Illinois clean energy transition, with a focus on workers and their communities. Summer scholars are mentored by experienced staff as they contribute to applied research projects and learn about Illinois clean energy policy.

    Positions are full-time for the duration of the summer and in person at the Labor and Employment Relations building on campus. Summer scholars will receive an hourly wage.

  • Master of Science Graduate Assistantship in Forest Soils (Fall 2025 start), The University of Maine (Orono, ME; due March 1)

    The University of Maine’s School of Forest Resources is seeking a highly motivated M.S. graduate student to undertake research on forest soils.

    About the research: Northern forests are changing quickly due to climate change and human use. Policymakers look to researchers for guidance on how human activity will affect forest ecosystems, the climate, and livelihoods. As a graduate student in this program, you will have the opportunity to design and conduct independent research addressing these critical issues. 

  • Organization of Fish and Wildlife Information Managers (OFWIM) Annual Conference and Student Research Scholarship Award

    OFWIM's Annual Conference will take place in early October in Arcadia, Missouri. Each year they award scholarships to two deserving local students to attend that year's and the next year's conferences and provide some research support. 

  • Research Assistantship at CERL, Champaign, IL (due Nov. 15 or open until filled)

    Conduct fundamental and applied research in the use of geospatial information, remote sensing technologies and machine learning to better understand wildland fire processes on military lands both in the United States and globally. Major research areas include burned area delineation, burn severity, aboveground biomass fuel estimation, and wildland fire risk/ hazard. Applies professional knowledge and experience in GIS, remote sensing, and machine learning to develop guidance and procedures for land management of military installations. Develop peer-reviewed and technical reports, present findings at Professional meetings, and to stakeholders both within and external to the Department of Defense.

  • Graduate Student Position for Landowner Survey on Wildlife Management (Deadline: December 2, 2022)

    The University of Maryland Extension is seeking a graduate student to assist in conducting research of private landowner knowledge and actions related to wildlife and habitat conservation. The purpose of this project is to inform future educational and extension initiatives related to wildlife conservation. Because 92% of Maryland's land area is under private ownership, wildlife and habitat conservation in the state relies heavily on the actions of private landowners. The graduate student will work with the principal investigator, Dr. Luke Macaulay, and a postdoctoral researcher in implementing the project.The graduate student will be focused on the implementation of the survey, analysis, and publishing results. A significant amount of preparation and design work for the survey has been completed, including conducting focus group meetings, establishing a statewide sample of landowners with both addresses and emails, and pre-testing and piloting the questionnaire. The student will be able to draw on this work in making final adjustments to the survey. The survey will consist of both written and electronic delivery of the survey to maximize response and minimize bias.

  • Summer Field Technician (east-central Illinois)

    Position:  Summer Field Technician

    Dates of appointment:  from date filled through August 17, 2018

    Supervisor: Maddy Kangas

    Primary Position Function:  Assist graduate students with field work collecting pollinators and agricultural pests from prairie restorations in the agricultural landscape in Central Illinois.

    Duties and Responsibilities:  Travel to and from field sites around Illinois; assist with setup and checking of pollinator traps in the field; assist with vegetation surveys; participate in visual pest surveys.

    Qualifications:  Good judgement and interpersonal skills. Requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 40 or more pounds of gear) and meticulous data recording.  Candidate must be willing to work in adverse weather conditions, possibly weekends. A valid driver’s license is required.
