Here at the Center for Writing Studies we’re looking forward to a great spring semester! First off, we welcome Nicole Turnipseed to our administrative team. Niki is the new Assistant Director. She is taking over for Kaia Simon. We thank Kaia for all her hard work during her tenure as AD, and we’re excited to work with Niki!
We have a number of events planned for the semester and we’ll continue to add events that will help us fulfill our mission.
Some of our plans for this semester include:
- Continuing to give scholars and graduate students opportunities to present their work through our Brownbag Series. This semester, our Brownbags will be held Wednesdays at noon in English Building 107A. Some Brownbags include:
- Social Justice Pedagogy Brownbag (Feb 8)
- Joyce Walker English, Illinois State (Feb 22)
- Preparing for the CWS Grad Symposium Brownbag (March 8)
- Kristi McDuffie, English, UIUC (April 5)
- Dana Ferris (UC-Davis) will visit in March. Dr. Ferris will give a talk to the Writers Workshop staff and will conduct a Writing Across the Curriculum workshop.
- The annual Gesa E. Kirsch CWS Graduate Student Symposium will be on Friday, April 21. We’re happy to announce that Gesa Kirsch will join us again this year and that Mary P. Sheridan will give the keynote address.
- Supporting groups and initiatives across campus. A couple of these include:
- Social Justice Pedagogy working group. The goal of this group is to find and create better ways to integrate social justice issues in the teaching of writing
- Cultural-Historical Activity Theory (CHAT) reading group (CHAT Chat). CHAT chat began last semester and will continue to meet once a month this semester
Don't forget to check out our calendar, and to friend us on Facebook (Center for Writing Studies), and follow us on Twitter (@UofIllinoisCWS) for the most up-to-date information.
We hope to see you at all of these events!
The CWS administrative team,
Paul Prior, María Carvajal and Nicole Turnipseed
