Yoon Pak, professor and department head of Education Policy, Organization and Leadership, has been appointed to the Illinois State Board of Education's State Assessment Review Committee.
The federal Every Student Succeeds Act requires states to assess their elementary and secondary education learning standards for English language arts (ELA), mathematics, and science. Each state may also have a general assessment for the majority of its students, and an alternate assessment for the 1 percent of students with the most significant cognitive disabilities. ESSA also requires that English learners be assessed in four domains (reading, writing, speaking and listening) each year until they reach proficiency.
ISBE's State Assessment Review Committee is required to review the content and design of the assessments (including whether the requirements of subsection (i) of this Section have been met), the time and money expended at the local and State levels to prepare for and administer the assessments, the collective results of the assessments as measured against the stated purpose of assessing student performance, and other issues involving the assessments identified by the Committee.
The Committee makes periodic recommendations to the State Superintendent of Education and the General Assembly concerning the assessments.
Pak's appointment to this state-wide committee is a great honor and speaks highly to her scholarly reputation and impact of her work; please join us in thanking her for this service to the state.
