Susan Fowler, professor emerita SPED, was selected for the 2024 Romaine P. Mackey Award from the Division of Leaders and Legacy of the Council for Exceptional Children.
The award is given to an outstanding professional who has demonstrated leadership in CEC and other organizations in various areas within the field: service delivery, teacher education and professional development, research, policy, assessment, and publications. The individual should be nominated by someone familiar with the nature and quality of their work and who can speak to the nominee's character.
Fowler will be presented with her award at the CEC Convention in San Antonio, Texas, on March 15. Those who wish to attend the ceremony virtually can register to attend via Zoom.
Fowler served as dean of the College of Education from 2000 to 2006. She began her tenure in the Department of Special Education as an associate professor and department head in 1990. From the mid-1990s through 2000, Fowler served as associate dean for academic affairs. She retired from the College in January of 2016.
During her career, Fowler was actively involved with national organizations, serving as president of the Division of Early Childhood of the Council of Exceptional Children, president of CEC, and president of the Higher Education Consortium of Special Education. She received the College of Education Service Award in 2014.
