Helen Neville, interim head Curriculum & Instruction and professor Educational Psychology, has co-authored a manuscript titled Racism in Counseling and Psychotherapy: Illuminate and Disarm in the American Psychological Association's special issue of their journal American Psycholgist.
The article contends that psychology mirrors cultural racism and that in the name of professionalism, psychology can disguise racism as therapy through white epistemology. The article also offers solutions for dismantling the inherent bias within counseling and psychotherapy.
Nevile was a co-author with Derald Wing Sue and Laura Smith of Teachers College, Columbia University. More info on this special edition of American Psychologist is available here.
