Everybody say READ ALOUD ...
Daily Harambee is underway for students again this summer in Champaign. The Ujima Freedom School kicked off its six-week program on June 10 at Dr. Howard Elementary School.
Champaign Freedom School provides a safe and engaging summer learning environment for students ages six to 13. Since 2021, it has served over 250 elementary students, employed 40 young people, and worked with 25 community education partners, serving predominantly Black and Latinx families locally. A Children's Defense Fund official site, Champaign Freedom School provides in-person instruction, socialization, and the introduction of a strong reading curriculum to its scholars. Goals of the program are to drastically reduce summer learning loss, while increasing reading interest and confidence in students.
The summer enrichment program is provided to families at no cost, thanks to investment from College of Education donors and collaboration with university and community partners. Education at Illinois is proud to keep supporting culturally relevant academic achievement and engagement in the local community through this transformational program.
