Congratulations to Cherie Avent, assistant professor, Educational Psychology, on being named to the News-Gazette's 2023 40 Under 40 Class. She was honored as part of the class at the 40 Under 40 banquet last Thursday. Avent was nominated by UI executive vice provost for academic affairs William Bernhard.
He says in the nomination: "Dr. Avent's contributions to bringing together the community to address the inequality faced by Champaign's minority population are a worthy reason to be celebrated. She is devoted to positively impacting populations of the community who are often overlooked."
Avent was honored for collaborating with local African American churches and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District to understand community experiences with COVID-19, partnering students with local community organizations to offer evaluation services through her course.
