    African American studies professor Merle Bowen examines the quilombo land movement in Brazil that is seeking land rights for rural Black residents in her new book “For Land and Liberty: Black Struggles in Rural Brazil.” Bowen’s research looks at land, labor, and agrarian and rural issues, as well as politics, race and gender in Africa and the African diaspora.
