University of Illinois history professor Roderick Wilson writes about the environmental history of Japan’s rivers and the interactions between the rivers, society and government in his new book “Turbulent Streams: An Environmental History of Japan’s Rivers, 1600-1930.” That riparian history is important for understanding Japan’s modern transformation, yet it has been largely ignored, he said.
