  • A temporary farewell to the Altgeld bells

Photo of a worker standing on top of a giant bell that is attached to a wooden frame and using a huge wrench and a mallet to detach the bell from the frame.

Workers from White’s Clock and Carillon Northeast pound to loosen the nuts on the bolts holding the massive bells in the Altgeld Hall chimes tower. Giant wrenches, heavy mallets and lots of PB B’laster are the tools of choice as the crews prepare for the bells to be lifted out of the tower.

The historic bells that have rung out over campus for more than 100 years are removed as part of a project to restore the historic building. The chimes tower houses 15 bells that weigh a total of 7.5 tons. The tower roof and bells are removed so structural steel can be installed in the tower.
