Diptych image with headshot of Kira Dominguez Hultgren and a weaving titled "Arose."

Artist, weaver and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign art professor Kira Dominguez Hultgren has been awarded a 2024 United States Artists Fellowship. Their work “Arose” was inspired by two phulkaris that their great-aunt Dalip Kaur Bains embroidered in 1925 in Jandiala, India. Phulkari, meaning “flower shape” in Punjabi, is stitched silk in cotton woven khadi fabric.

“Arose,” 2020. Virgin and less pure wool in homespun marigold and primitive rust; mixed yarn blends from the U.S., U.K., and Canada; Indian cotton; Chinese silk; climbing gym rope from Berkeley Ironworks; found wooden frame bars and stakes; cam straps and d-rings. 132" x 132" x 26" (dimensions variable)
