Six researchers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been named Fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.

Recently retired and long-serving staff employees will be honored at the 2015 Staff Service Recognition Banquet Nov. 5 at the I Hotel and Conference Center. The program will honor 110 employees who retired between Sept. 1, 2014, and Aug. 31, 2015. In addition employess will be honored for service completed during that time.

Seven Urbana campus faculty members have been named University Scholars and will be honored at a campus reception Sept. 28 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. in the ballroom of the Alice Campbell Alumni Center, 601 S. Lincoln Ave., Urbana.

The Graduate College recently announced seven Focal Point projects that will receive funding for 2015-16. Now in its seventh year, Focal Point is a Graduate College initiative designed to stimulate new interdisciplinary research through collaborations among faculty members and graduate students from multiple fields. The awarded projects include graduate student and faculty organizers from 16 different campus units or departments and will involve dozens of others as participants. Many of the projects have a strong international focus, and several tap into campus strengths in areas such as health, diversity and sustainability.

Thirteen U. of I. faculty members have been selected to receive one-year fellowships that will enable their research teams to pursue collaborative projects with the National Center for Supercomputing Applications.

Four faculty members are the inaugural recipients of the Campus Award for Excellence in Faculty Leadership. The three annual awards for excellence in faculty leadership, given by the Office of the Provost, recognize faculty members who distinguish themselves with their vision of the future and their effort to enable and promote others in shaping that future.

Faculty and staff members, and graduate teaching assistants at the U. of I. were honored April 30 for excellence in teaching, mentoring and advising. Each was recognized during a reception at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - The John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has awarded 2015 Guggenheim fellowships to two University of Illinois faculty members: Wendy K. Tam Cho, professor of political science and of statistics, and Philip W. Phillips, professor of physics.

Outstanding individual and group outreach efforts were recognized April 14 with the 2015 Campus Awards for Excellence in Public Engagement. The awards were presented by Chancellor Phyllis M. Wise and Pradeep K. Khanna, the associate chancellor for corporate and international relations.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two University of Illinois professors have been elected fellows of the American Academy of Microbiology. Steven Blanke and Bryan White are among the 79 microbiologists chosen by their peers for this honor.

The U. of I.'s Urbana campus has been recognized as a "U.S. Scholar Top Producer" by the U.S. Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs for academic year 2014-15, with six recipients of U.S. Fulbright Scholar awards. According to a report in the Chronicle of Higher Education, the campus ranks No. 5 among U.S. research institutions in the number of faculty members receiving the prestigious award in support of teaching and research abroad.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Tami Bond, a professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been awarded a 2014 MacArthur Fellowship, commonly known as a "genius grant," from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.

The National Center for Supercomputing Applications has selected nine U. of I. researchers to receive NCSA fellowships with research support that will enable them to pursue collaborative projects with the researchers and computer technology experts at NCSA. Fellows play an important role at NCSA as the center implements its "big research, big data, big compute" strategy to develop long-term research activities addressing complex grand challenge-scale problems across science, engineering, humanities and the arts.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Three University of Illinois professors have been elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, one of the longest-standing honorary societies in the nation. Tere R. O'Connor, a professor of dance; John A. Rogers, the Swanlund Chair of Materials Science and Engineering; and Wilfred A. van der Donk, the Richard E. Heckert Endowed Chair in Chemistry, will join other new members in an induction ceremony in October at the academy's headquarters in Cambridge, Mass.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Five professors at the University of Illinois - Asef Bayat, Joy Harjo, Catherine Prendergast, Stephen Andrew Taylor and Deke Weaver - have been named 2014 Guggenheim Fellows. They are among 178 North American artists, scholars and scientists selected on the basis of achievement and exceptional promise from a pool of almost 3,000 applicants, according to the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation.

U.S. News & World Report released its rankings of some graduate programs March 11 as part of the 2015 U.S. News & World Report Best Graduate Schools rankings. Civil engineering and condensed matter physics at Illinois both received No. 1 rankings.

Twelve U. of I. faculty members from a range of fields have been selected as Blue Waters Professors, an honor that comes with substantial computing and data resources on the Blue Waters supercomputer at the university's National Center for Supercomputing Applications.
