CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Three University of Illinois professors have been selected to receive 2014 Sloan Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - University of Illinois professor Lane Martin is among the 102 researchers to receive the 2013 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE), the highest honor the U.S. government confers upon young investigators establishing their independent research careers.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - John A. Rogers, a Swanlund Professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, has been given a 2013 American Ingenuity Award by Smithsonian Magazine, the publishing arm of the Smithsonian Institution.

Five U. of I. faculty members have been named 2013-14 fellows of the Committee on Institutional Cooperation's Academic Leadership Program.

Illinois is being recognized by Insight Into Diversity magazine as a recipient of its 2013 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity Award.

The U. of I. moved up two places in U.S. News & World Report's 2014 edition of "Best Colleges," released Sept. 10. Illinois is now tied at No. 11 among public universities. The Urbana campus also moved up, five places, in the national rankings, and now is tied at No. 41.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — Six Urbana campus faculty members have been named University Scholars. The program recognizes excellence in teaching, scholarship and service. The faculty members will be honored at a campus reception Tuesday (Sept. 10) from 4:30 to 6 p.m. at the Levis Center, 919 W. Illinois St., Urbana.

Professor, teach thyself. That message will provide the foundation for a series of workshops being led by 2013-14 Distinguished Teacher-Scholar Amy Woods and sponsored by the Office of the Provost and the new Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning.

Stephen P. Long, the Gutgsell Endowed Professor of Crop Sciences and Plant Biology and a faculty member in the Institute for Genomic Biology, has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society of London, the world’s oldest scientific academy in continuous existence. Members are elected for life on the basis of excellence in science, through a thorough peer review process.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Eleven faculty members, four academic professionals and five graduate teaching assistants at the University of Illinois were honored (Tuesday) April 23 for excellence in teaching and advising. The group was recognized during a reception at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center.

Eight civil service staff employees will be honored with the Chancellor's Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet April 22. The award recognizes exceptional performance.

The Graduate School of Library and Information Science and the department of civil engineering were ranked first in the nation in the U.S. News & World Report graduate program rankings released March 12.

The Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities has awarded its 2013-15 Andrew W. Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships in the Humanities to two scholars chosen from an international field of applicants. In addition, it has awarded its annual Faculty and Graduate Student Fellowships to seven faculty members and seven graduate students from the campus for the 2013-14 academic year.

The National Great Rivers Research and Education Center has recruited eight U. of I. scientists to serve as faculty fellows who will help set the stage for ongoing learning, discovery and engagement at the center, located near the confluence of the Mississippi, Missouri and Illinois rivers in East Alton, Ill. The center is a partnership of Lewis and Clark Community College, the U. of I. and the Prairie Research Institute's Illinois Natural History Survey.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Weng Cho Chew and Thomas J. Overbye, both professors of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, have been elected to membership in the National Academy of Engineering.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $100,000 to the Illinois Program for Research in the Humanities at the UI to fund the planning of an extensive consortium of humanities institutes in the Midwest and beyond. By leveraging the strengths of multiple distinctive campuses across institutional boundaries, the initiative, titled "Humanities Without Walls," aims to create new avenues for collaborative research, teaching and the production of scholarship in the humanities, forging and sustaining areas of inquiry that cannot be created or maintained without cross-institutional cooperation.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Joanna Chromik, a junior at the University of Illinois, has been awarded a Beinecke Scholarship, which awards $34,000 for future graduate study in the arts, humanities, or social sciences.

The UI graduate program in civil engineering was ranked No. 1 in the nation in the most recent U.S. News & World Report graduate schools rankings, released March 13. Several other UI programs received high rankings as well. As is the magazine's usual custom, many programs were not evaluated this year.

Rankings are not the end-all, be-all of measuring a university's worth, but being placed at the top never hurts.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science has recognized Lynford L. Goddard as the first recipient of the newly established AAAS Early Career Award for Public Engagement with Science. The award recognizes the achievements of individual early-career scientists and engineers who have demonstrated significant contributions to public engagement activities while simultaneously pursuing a research career.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Gary R. List, a retired consultant for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has been chosen to receive an honorary doctor of science degree at the 2 p.m. campuswide Commencement ceremony May 15 at the Assembly Hall.

Four University of Illinois chemistry professors are among the 192 distinguished scientists elected 2010 fellows of the American Chemical Society. Peter Beak, Theodore Brown, Jeffrey Moore and Kenneth Suslick were recognized by their peers for their outstanding contributions to the field of chemistry and to ACS.

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign undergraduates recently received nationally competitive awards for overseas foreign language study. Emelyn Baker, of Winnebago, Ill, will study Chinese this summer through the U.S. State Department's Critical Language Scholarship. Seniors Brett Cox, of Rose Hill, Kan., and Ryan Rogowski, of Naperville, Ill., were offered Boren Undergraduate Scholarships through the National Security Education Program to fund a year of study abroad. Another Illinois candidate, senior Joseph Helbing, of Berwyn, Ill., is a Boren Scholarship alternate.

Eight staff employees were honored with the Chancellor's Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet April 13. The award recognizes exceptional performance; each recipient receives $2,000 and a plaque. Recipients' names also are engraved on a plaque displayed in the Staff Human Resources Office.

Academic professionals perform a wide range of critical functions for the campus community and beyond. They provide critical administrative support, support research laboratories and educational programs, and offer important outreach programs throughout the state. Now in its 22nd year, the awards are intended to honor the accomplishments and contributions of individuals in this employment category.
