    At its March 10 meeting, the UI Board of Trustees approved the appointment of 25 faculty members as Center for Advanced Study fellows and associates for the 2010-11 academic year.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two University of Illinois faculty members have been selected to receive 2010 Sloan Research Fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan foundation: Yann R. Chemla, a professor of physics, and Karrie Karahalios, a professor of computer science.

  • Reginald J. Alston, a professor of kinesiology and community health, was honored with this year's Campus Award for Excellence in Public Engagement. Alston is a nationally and internationally renowned advocate and scholar for individuals with disabilities.

  • Faculty fellows announced for teaching academies

    Seven new Teaching Academies Faculty Fellows were recently announced. The Faculty Fellows Program, new this fall, supports the teaching academies, which seek to enhance the campus' teaching and learning environment. The teaching academies are focal points of faculty members' collaborative investigations of pedagogical challenges and innovations. In some areas, the teaching academies are even advancing the state of research on higher education concerns.

  • NCSA Faculty Fellows announced

    The National Center for Supercomputing Applications has chosen seven UI faculty members as Faculty Fellows for 2009-2010. The Faculty Fellows Program, jointly funded by NCSA and the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and in its 11th year, extends opportunities in advanced computing and information technology to UI faculty members. Through the program, faculty members can access and benefit from NCSA's high-performance computing and storage environment, cutting-edge visualization and data analysis capabilities, and opportunities for multidisciplinary collaboration. Fellowships include up to $30,000 in support.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - One hundred and forty-six freshmen and sophomores at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been designated Chancellor's Scholars, chosen for their academic excellence and leadership potential, in the Campus Honors Program this fall.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Each of eight University of Illinois graduate students - including four from the Urbana campus - has been awarded a $9,000 FMC Technologies Inc. Fellowship for the 2009-2010 academic year.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fifteen University of Illinois students from the Urbana-Champaign, Chicago and Springfield campuses have won Avery Brundage Scholarships for excellence in academics and athletics. Each student will receive $2,400 for the 2009-2010 academic year.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Two University of Illinois students - one of whom is enrolled at the Urbana campus - have won 2009-2010 Paul D. Doolen graduate scholarships for the study of aging. Each will receive $5,000 to continue their research.

  • Fellows announced for Community Informatics Institute

    Under the auspices of the Illinois Informatics Institute, the Community Informatics Initiative received funds from the Provost's Office to integrate community informatics into various disciplines across campus. In April, a CII committee awarded seed grants to nine faculty projects. These recipients will be appointed CII Fellows for 2009-10, collaborating with CII and sharing their work in the CII research series. The fellows and their project titles:

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Fourteen University of Illinois employees recently were honored for exemplary work. Six received the Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence Award at a campus reception April 1; eight received the Chancellor's Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet April 13.

    Eight staff employees were honored with the Chancellor's Distinguished Staff Award at a banquet April 13. The award recognizes exceptional performance; each recipient receives $2,000 and a plaque. Recipients' names also are inscribed on a plaque displayed in the Staff Human Resources Office.

    Six academic professionals received the 2009 Chancellor's Academic Professional Excellence award at an April 1 campus reception. Now in its 21st year, the program honors contributions made by academic professionals on campus. Recipients are chosen for excellence in their work, personal and professional contributions to their fields, and the positive impact they have on colleagues, students and the public. Each award winner receives $2,000 - a $1,000 increase in base salary and a $1,000 one-time budget increase for their department.

    The UI Board of Trustees voted March 11 to present its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Medallion, to three scientists from the Urbana campus: Sir Anthony J. Leggett, the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Professor and Center for Advanced Study Professor of Physics; Carl R. Woese, the Stanley O. Ikenberry Endowed Chair and Center for Advanced Study Professor of Microbiology; and the late Paul C. Lauterbur, the Center for Advanced Study Professor of Chemistry, Biophysics and Computational Biology and Bioengineering and Distinguished University Professor of Medical Information Sciences.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Eleven faculty members of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have been awarded the distinction of AAAS Fellow by the American Association for the Advancement of Science: Richard D. Braatz, Jeffrey D. Brawn, J. Gary Eden, William S. Hammack, Xuming He, Feng Sheng Hu, Schuyler S. Korban, Steven R. Leigh, Eric Oldfield, John A. Rogers and Patrick J. Weatherhead.

    CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Steve Granick, Founder Professor of Engineering, and professor of materials science and engineering, of chemistry, of chemical and biomolecular engineering, and of physics, was awarded the Polymer Physics Prize of the American Physical Society.
