  • Habitat Strike Team Coordinator, National Great Rivers Research and Education Center (NGRREC) (Alton, IL)

    This unclassified, full-time position is part of the Education Section team and is stationed at the Kansas Wetlands Education Center (KWEC) in Great Bend, Kansas. It is directly supervised by Michael Rader, Wildlife Education Supervisor.  The incumbent develops and presents educational programs, lectures, tours, outreach programs, field trips, workshops, media programs, special events and seminars. Conducts in-service trainings for local teachers, administrators, and students to implement wildlife/aquatic and outdoor education into the curriculum of local school districts. Facilitates these trainings with KACEE (the Kansas Association for Conservation and Environmental Education) and ensures the success of the curriculum and training through evaluation. Responsible for coordination of public programs and activities which includes the development and implementation of on-site wildlife programs, the presentation of special on-site and off-site activities for the public and the evaluation of the effectiveness of these programs. Presentations will serve to inform and educate constituents about the natural resources of Kansas.

  • Land Conservation Specialist (Multiple positions located in IL.), NGRREC, Lewis and Clark Community College (Champaign, Olney, & Effingham, IL; open until filled)

    The Land Conservation Specialist will be expected to provide conservation assistance to agricultural and private landowners. This specialist will be a technical expert on all aspects of the Conservation Reserve Program, filling key needs to secure and improve conservation acres on the ground. Primary focuses will include data collection and consultation with agricultural producers about conservation plans for new CRP establishments, compiling CRP conservation options for prospective landowners, and providing technical information to landowners about mid-contract management practices necessary to maintain high-quality restorations throughout the duration of their CRP contracts.     This is a trainee position in the Forestry Technician profession that performs basic duties and receives training, in support of a unit's various forestry, recreation and natural resources management programs, such as timber and silviculture, recreation and trails, wildlife, fisheries, watershed improvement, range, special uses, and wildland fire.  The responsibilities are listed at the full performance level and may include, but are not limited to: marking and measuring specific tree species and observing defects under the guidance of a supervisor, gathering, compiling, and recommending improvements for developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit, functioning as Collection Officer for recreation sites.     The Restoration Technician performs and participates in preserve operations, maintenance, and management. He/she maintains preserve areas frequented by the visiting public and removes exotic species. CPI maintains tools and equipment and may open and close preserve(s) to the visiting public. May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations for long periods of time in isolated settings, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances. Requires considerable physical exertion and/or muscular strain.

    INHS is seeking field technicians (1-3) to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois, focusing on the Mississippi River.   • Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessments Researcher (up to 5 positions), IL State Geological Survey (Savoy, IL; due Aug. 11)

    ISGS is seeking to hire a Visiting Scientific Specialist, Environmental Assessments Researcher (up to 5 depending on applicant pool and programmatic need) to perform sponsored research on environmental assessments.  The assessments will involve evaluating potential environmental and geologic hazards and risks for Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) infrastructure improvement projects. IDOT's infrastructure projects range in size and can involve anything from a single property to hundreds of properties across many miles of existing or future highways.  IDOT uses the assessments completed by ISGS to protect workers and public safety, to reduce IDOT's liability, and to minimize delays by operating in an efficient and cost-effective manner. Position is based in Savoy, Illinois. 

  • Traveling Environmental Educator, Nature's Classroom Institute (CA, TX, WI, FL; due Aug. 16)

    As a Nature’s Classroom Institute (NCI) team member you will be joining a team passionate about the natural and built environment and be ready to pass that passion onto our visiting students. We teach with influence from the Montessori Method, allowing students to be hands on, explore and take responsibility, it is our job to guide and facilitate, allowing the students to learn from their surroundings and their peers. You will be working with groups of no more than 12 students, allowing them to lead the way through our many classes and simulations. Our day begins at 8am and ends at 9:30pm with plenty of breaks and meals in between.   • Wildlife Technician - Wetlands and Waterbirds (Aug. 21 start), Illinois Natural History Survey (Havana, IL; open until filled)

    The Forbes Biological Station is seeking two research technicians to assist with multiple studies assessing wetland and waterfowl ecology along the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. These positions will include a mix of field and lab work. Primary field duties will include automated recording unit (ARU) monitoring/maintenance and waterfowl trapping. Successful candidates will be required to climb ~10ft using climbing sticks to check ARUs in trees and structures. Primary lab duties will include ARU data processing and soil core sample processing. Other research opportunities include participating in marking waterfowl with GSM transmitters, vegetation and waterfowl surveys; sampling waterfowl for avian influenza; vegetation identification and cover-mapping of wetland basins; safe operation of small and large boats, ATVs, and 4-wheel drive trucks; data entry and management; maintenance of equipment and facilities; and other duties as assigned.

    The Illinois Natural History Survey at the University of Illinois is seeking a Fisheries Technician to work in conjunction with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Biologists. The primary responsibility of the Fisheries Technician would be to conduct field and laboratory work in support of sportfish management projects in streams and reservoirs in Illinois, including the collection, processing, and interpretation of fisheries data. Duties may include: working with a crew of 3-4 persons; preparing samples for fish aging, determining age estimates, and performing basic data entry, processing, and analyses (training provided, if needed); assisting with fish community surveys using active (daytime and nighttime DC boat electrofishing) and passive (fyke nets, hoop nets, and gill nets) gears; and more.

  • Soil Health Specialist, Knox County Soil and Water Conservation District (Vincennes, IN; due Sept. 30)

    The Soil Health Specialist is a full-time, permanent position with benefits that will be tasked with leading the SWCD’s efforts to promote the use of agricultural practices that improve the health of our soils. The Specialist will be a people person and will spend much of their time in on-farm visits with farmers and landowners to persuade them to adopt agricultural practices such as no till, cover crops, nutrient management planning, integrated pest management, and regenerative practices. The Specialist will establish rapport with agronomists, ag consultants, and ag retailers to stay up to date on a variety of subjects related to soil health and regenerative agriculture.

    This is a trainee position in the Forestry Technician profession that performs basic duties and receives training in support of various forestry, recreation and natural resources management programs, such as timber and silviculture, recreation and trails, wildlife, fisheries, watershed improvement, range, special uses, and wildland fire.  The responsibilities are listed at the full performance level and may include marking and measuring specific tree species and observing defects under the guidance of a supervisor, gathering, compiling, and recommending improvements for developed and dispersed recreation sites on the unit, functioning as Collection Officer for recreation sites - collecting fees, counting, reconciling money collected, and ensuring deposits are made appropriately, and more.

    The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking technicians to assist with all aspects of Human Dimensions research including, but not limited to, mail surveys, telephone interviews, data entry and analysis. This position will be located in Champaign, Illinois. 

  • Chicago Field Fellow (year-long field technician for fruit bat research), Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago (Madagascar; due June 30)

    This one-year position will involve organizing and participating in monthly field expeditions for Ekipa Fanihy with one additional tech and a team of PhD students from the University of Antananarivo. This position will take over from one of our outgoing techs and overlap a current tech who will remain through August 2024 and be replaced in September 2024. 

  • Land Steward, Conservation Practitioner III (job number 53435), Kankakee Sands Preserve Illinois, The Nature Conservancy (Morocco, IN; due June 16)

    This is a full time, regular, field-oriented position based at our Kankakee Sands Project in Pembroke Township, Illinois.  Duties may include supervising seasonal and part-time staff, may also help plan and direct preserve work groups, including staff or volunteers, may help organize and participate in community outreach events and/or volunteer workdays, may work under minimal/distant supervision and make some independent decisions as delegated by supervisor.  Some work might require working on your own, working in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances, may travel a few times a year for training or regional meetings.

  • Plant Protection Technician (seasonal), USDA-APHIS-PPQ (Champaign, IL; due June 12)

    Plant Protection Technicians play an important role in detection and management of invasive species in Illinois. This Technician position will support two APHIS-PPQ programs during the 2023 field season: (1) trapping and visual surveys to detect invasive exotic tree pests and (2) releases of parasitoid wasps for biological control of emerald ash borer. The Technician will install and maintain insect traps, collect and screen samples, evaluate field sites for biological control suitability, release biocontrol agents, and record data in local and national databases. This work will require working in a variety of environments throughout Central and Southern Illinois, including forest preserves, parks, urban and industrial areas, and rail yards. The Technician will also be expected to participate in outreach supporting these programs through daily interactions with the public while working in the field as well as occasional involvement in organized outreach events. The Technician will work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Scientific Specialist, Aquatic Invasive Species, Illinois Natural History Survey (Glencoe, IL; due June 13)

    The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking an Aquatic Invasive Species Specialist to develop and conduct basic and applied research with an emphasis on improving the effectiveness of scientific outreach for Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS). This position will be based out of the Chicago Botanic Garden in Glencoe, Illinois. 

  • Scientific Specialist, Field Scientist (2 positions), Illinois Natural History Survey (Havanan or Pawnee, IL; due June 13)

    Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to conducting, developing, and participating in research and outreach activities of the Survey, providing conservation program oversite, technical assistance and project management for conservation practices established through CREP, providing technical assistance and project management for the completion of CREP conservation easement projects, providing responsive management for the efficient and effective processing of CREP conservation easement enrollments, including coordinating the initial application, technical and field review with IDNR, and more.
