  • WMD and Proliferation

The international community faces no shortage of challenges when it comes to preventing the spread of nuclear weapons. The crisis in US-Russia relations, the slow pace of nuclear disarmament, the future of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, and the emergence of new technologies with military applications–these are just a few of the issues that nuclear policy professionals are working to address today. Each of these problems will require creative ideas and novel methodologies to surmount.

In this talk, Sarah Bidgood and Dave Schmerler (UIUC 2012) will highlight different opportunities and approaches to contribute to this process.  They will focus in particular on the need for greater diversity, including gender diversity, among experts and practitioners in this field. All students, regardless of their prior knowledge of nonproliferation, disarmament, or arms control, are welcome to attend.

This event takes place online on October 1 at 5pm central, registration is required at:

  • Undergraduate Research Symposium 2019 - Now accepting student submissions

The Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) is now accepting submissions for the 2019 Undergraduate Research Symposium (URS), set for Thursday, April 18. The URS is the signature event of Undergraduate Research Week (April 14-20), and brings together students, faculty, and staff from all disciplines on the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus, as well as corporate partners and sponsors, to learn more about undergraduate research and its potential to change the world. Over the course of the day, students present their work in concurrent oral and poster presentations (including creative performances), the breadth and scope of which reflect not only the wide range of academic disciplines at the University of Illinois, but also speak to the caliber of our undergraduates.

All undergraduate students currently involved with research are eligible to present. For more information on the URS, including answers to frequently asked questions, please visit: http://undergradresearch.illinois.edu/symposium.html

Deadline for submitting an application to the URS is Friday, February 1, 2019, at 11:59 pm.

  • CFA Social Justice Scholarship for UIUC Undergrads -- due Nov 1

    2017 SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

The Campus Faculty Association is proud to announce that we are awarding up to five $1000 scholarships for undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to social justice in the community.

Winners will be chosen on the basis of their commitment to social justice in the community. To be considered, an undergraduate must be currently enrolled as a student in good standing at the UIUC with at least one more semester of study before graduation. Preference will be given to students who will be involved in social justice activity during the period of the award.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae, a short (250 word) essay describing the student’s involvement in social justice work, and the name and contact information for one reference who can speak to the student’s record in this regard. We will begin to accept applications on September 15, 2017, and applications are due by November 1, 2017. Awards will be announced at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester.

Social justice efforts may take many forms, including volunteer and paid work. Although usually performed through the auspices of a non-profit organization, it may also involve a less formally structured activity. Whatever form it may take, such activity is not simply charity work but an effort that seeks to improve the living and working conditions for less advantaged members of the community in concrete and sustainable ways. Examples include work associated with: labor organization and strike support; patients’ rights; civil rights; housing assistance programs like Habitat for Humanity; food pantries and food delivery programs; incarcerated people’s rights and education; early childhood development programs; shelters for homeless people and battered women; immigrant rights; and so on.

Please submit applications to campusfacultyassoc@gmail.com. All application materials should be submitted as a single .pdf file.

  • Opportunity for Those Going Abroad Next Semester

Hello fellow Social Work students! I am in the process of creating a database as part of a post-abroad follow up assignment. The intent is to provide the DRES office with data regarding accessibility in various study abroad programs to encourage those with disabilities to seek out opportunities abroad. The ultimate goal of my project is to increase study abroad participation among students with disabilities on campus. This database will be a collection of study abroad programs and the types of accessibility offered in host countries. This will allow students with disabilities to access information when choosing a study abroad program to ensure that they identify an opportunity that is most supportive of their needs. If you are willing to collect this information during your time abroad, please reach out to me via email (provided below). This is not limited to Social Work students.  Anyone going abroad can participate, so if you have a friend in a different major that is studying abroad in the Spring of 2019, please pass this information along! This would be completely on your own time and not a huge commitment, being that you will have all semester to gather this info.  And you have the opportunity to support others in their study abroad experiences!  All you would be responsible for is noting your observations in an excel spreadsheet. (Accessible restaurants, bathrooms, stores, doors, means of transportation etc). If you are interested and looking for more info please do not hesitate to reach out!

    Thanks,

    Becky Diamond
