  • Opportunity for Those Going Abroad Next Semester

Hello fellow Social Work students! I am in the process of creating a database as part of a post-abroad follow up assignment. The intent is to provide the DRES office with data regarding accessibility in various study abroad programs to encourage those with disabilities to seek out opportunities abroad. The ultimate goal of my project is to increase study abroad participation among students with disabilities on campus. This database will be a collection of study abroad programs and the types of accessibility offered in host countries. This will allow students with disabilities to access information when choosing a study abroad program to ensure that they identify an opportunity that is most supportive of their needs. If you are willing to collect this information during your time abroad, please reach out to me via email (provided below). This is not limited to Social Work students.  Anyone going abroad can participate, so if you have a friend in a different major that is studying abroad in the Spring of 2019, please pass this information along! This would be completely on your own time and not a huge commitment, being that you will have all semester to gather this info.  And you have the opportunity to support others in their study abroad experiences!  All you would be responsible for is noting your observations in an excel spreadsheet. (Accessible restaurants, bathrooms, stores, doors, means of transportation etc). If you are interested and looking for more info please do not hesitate to reach out!

    Thanks,

    Becky Diamond

  • Support the Student ACCESS Bill- SB2196

Undocumented students are currently ineligible to receive federal student aid, Pell grants, Illinois’ MAP grant and other forms of state-based financial aid. While Illinois currently offers students who meet certain criteria access to in-state tuition, students have very limited options for scholarships, making college unaffordable for many students. The Student ACCESS Bill (SB 2196) would provide undocumented college students the opportunity to apply for scholarships at 4-year public universities in Illinois, making it easier for all students to pay for their college education.

Our theme for this year’s summit is Decolonization: Our Rebirth.

The institutionalization of colonial practices has historically been forced into our existence as Womxn of Color in all parts of the world; including Africa, Latin America, and the U.S. This year’s theme will explore colonized ideologies that have been forcefully instilled in us and have oppressed us at the institutional, psychological, and emotional level.

In doing so, we will discuss ways to dismantle the structures that have marginalized and deemed us as subordinate by exploring ways to unlearn what we have been taught within ourselves and our daily lives. This theme will take an analytical approach to our cultures and socialized practices that have been historically ingrained in us through colonization. In doing so, we hope to reclaim our identities by acknowledging our past and taking control of our present for a greater future.

The crisis in US-Russia relations, the slow pace of nuclear disarmament, the future of North Korea’s nuclear weapons program, and the emergence of new technologies with military applications–these are just a few of the issues that nuclear policy professionals are working to address today. Each of these problems will require creative ideas and novel methodologies to surmount.

In this talk, Sarah Bidgood and Dave Schmerler (UIUC 2012) will highlight different opportunities and approaches to contribute to this process.  They will focus in particular on the need for greater diversity, including gender diversity, among experts and practitioners in this field. All students, regardless of their prior knowledge of nonproliferation, disarmament, or arms control, are welcome to attend.

This event takes place online on October 1 at 5pm central, registration is required at:

  • CFA Social Justice Scholarship for UIUC Undergrads -- due Nov 1

    2017 SOCIAL JUSTICE SCHOLARSHIP

The Campus Faculty Association is proud to announce that we are awarding up to five $1000 scholarships for undergraduate students who have demonstrated outstanding commitment to social justice in the community.

Winners will be chosen on the basis of their commitment to social justice in the community. To be considered, an undergraduate must be currently enrolled as a student in good standing at the UIUC with at least one more semester of study before graduation. Preference will be given to students who will be involved in social justice activity during the period of the award.

Applications must include a curriculum vitae, a short (250 word) essay describing the student’s involvement in social justice work, and the name and contact information for one reference who can speak to the student’s record in this regard. We will begin to accept applications on September 15, 2017, and applications are due by November 1, 2017. Awards will be announced at the beginning of the Spring 2018 semester.

Social justice efforts may take many forms, including volunteer and paid work. Although usually performed through the auspices of a non-profit organization, it may also involve a less formally structured activity. Whatever form it may take, such activity is not simply charity work but an effort that seeks to improve the living and working conditions for less advantaged members of the community in concrete and sustainable ways. Examples include work associated with: labor organization and strike support; patients’ rights; civil rights; housing assistance programs like Habitat for Humanity; food pantries and food delivery programs; incarcerated people’s rights and education; early childhood development programs; shelters for homeless people and battered women; immigrant rights; and so on.

Please submit applications to campusfacultyassoc@gmail.com. All application materials should be submitted as a single .pdf file.

  • COVID-19 Research at Bradley University

    Dear college students,

Hello, my name is Henry Keller. I am currently attending Bradley University in Peoria Illinois as an undergraduate Social Work major. I am hopeful that you may assist in my independent research. Under the guidance of my sponsor and Co-PI, Dr. Patricia Saleeby, I am exploring mental health needs of undergraduate students during COVID-19 pandemic and remote learning through an anonymous online survey. This study has received IRB approval from Bradley University. I am requesting that you complete the survey using the link below if you are a college student and 18 or older. Your participation is voluntary but there is no compensation for completing this survey. Your participation will help universities across the country better adapt to the current situation of remote learning and provide a better college experience for future semesters. If you have any questions, please contact me or Dr. Saleeby. Please click the link below to access the survey and the full informed consent. http://bradley.az1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6WJTxbGKxE8qHGJ

  • Apply to be a Women in Leadership Intern or Mentor

The YWCA of the University of Illinois is seeking Women in Leadership interns and mentors for the 2017-18 school year. Women in Leadership is an intensive, two semester leadership and project management internship. Structured as a group consulting project, the program allows interns to work directly with local human services agencies to learn about the nonprofit sector; identify organizational challenges; and research, propose, and implement solutions. Throughout the year, interns receive training focusing on professional development, leadership skills, and building a working team, all of which are applied to their projects. Interns are guided through this process by mentors drawn from Urbana-Champaign’s excellent professional and graduate student pools. Open to all UIUC students. For more information, please contact Amarin Young at amarin@ywcauofi.org.

  • Fall/Summer 2020 Advising Appointment

Fall/Summer 2020 Advising Appointments will still be happening, though as you'll see below, we have a bit more time than normal after spring break for everyone to have their appointment. Please call the office at 217-244-5246 and you can schedule an advising appointment. You will have the option to have a Zoom advising appointment or a phone advising appointment. You'll all get very comfortable with Zoom over the next few weeks, but it is very easy to use, especially on your end and due to the ability of me to share my screen with you, this would be my preferred method so that you can take a screen shot of your planning sheet and have a copy of it. I would strongly encourage you to be on WIFI during a Zoom meeting as I'm pretty confident it would use a decent amount of data. You can join a Zoom meeting and not utilize your camera if you'd rather not be seen. With my new fancy headset, you'll get to see me ready to take on dozens of Middle Schoolers at Call of Duty. If you can't get to WIFI or if you have issues with Zoom we can do a phone appointment, but this would be a secondary option. When you call to schedule your appointment, you'll be asked if you prefer a Zoom or phone appointment. If at all possible I'd prefer to proceed with Zoom.
