  • Survivor Day 2017

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is the one day a year when people who are affected by suicide loss gather around the world at events in their local communities for support, information, and empowerment.

The event features a screening of The Journey: A Story of Healing and Hope, an AFSP produced documentary that traces the grief and healing journey that follows a suicide loss through the eyes of a diverse group of loss survivors. The film shows how those left behind navigate the aftermath of their loved one's suicide to find meaning and even joy, and takes an intimate look at how their healing journey evolves over time.

  • Notify Me - Receive a notification when a seat in a full section or course becomes available

Want to know when a seat becomes available in a section of a course?

Course explorer is launching a “Notify Me” option in Course Explorer. This feature lets any authenticated user select “Favorites” and opt to receive an email if a seat becomes available in the section—when the status changes from Closed to Open. (FYI, the section status updates in Course Explorer from Self-Service every 10 minutes.)

To set up a notification follow these steps:

In order to do this go to https://courses.illinois.edu/ and log in. The log in link is on the top right hand side.
Then navigate to the course that you’re interested in https://courses.illinois.edu/schedule/2018/spring/SOCW/321 for example.
Then in the 3rd column, click on the star. This will add it to your favorites. When you do that a little window pops up that you can go to your favorites in my.courses.
Or you can click on “My Favorites” which is an orange box toward the right hand part of the screen.
The second column on this screen “Notify Me” has a checkbox you can click to be notified via e-mail if someone drops the course and space opens up.

The email notification will state the following:

This is an automated message from the Course Explorer system notifying you that a seat has become available for the following section:

    Term:
    Course:
    CRN:
    Meeting day/time:

This notification does not guarantee you the seat nor indicate that you are eligible to enroll in that section.

Visit Student Self-Service to register for classes once your Time Ticket is active.

  • Prison-based volunteer opportunity, info session 2/6

CAVE, which stands for Community Anti-Violence Education, is a democratically organized, peer-led counseling and education group initiated by men incarcerated at the Danville state prison in 2010 in order to help the neighborhoods from which they came, places devastated by violence, through spreading the knowledge and practice of trauma-informed practices. The group launched its outreach program in 2014, and since that time has worked with dozens of men at the prison, many of whom are now back home. Run by one of the program's alumni, a CAVE program is now operating at a re-entry facility in Chicago. In order to keep functioning at Danville, however, the program requires outside members to come in and contribute their time and heartfelt participation.

Other than a willingness to listen and be reflective, NO SPECIAL CLINICAL EXPERTISE IS REQUIRED. The operational foundation of CAVE is a curriculum based on psychiatrist Sandra Bloom's Sanctuary Model (sanctuaryweb.com), and we frequently consult with Elena Quintana, a Chicago-based psychologist with a long history of facilitating conflict resolution and restorative justice in low-income communities and carceral institutions.

CAVE is a program of the Education Justice Project (educationjustice.net), a unit of the College of Education at the University of Illinois, is an initiative that has since 2008 been teaching higher-level undergraduate courses and leading related programs at the nearby Danville state prison. Graduate students, community members, and faculty are encouraged to get involved with EJP's prison-based work.

We will hold an information session on Tuesday, February 6, from 12:15-1:00 at the EJP community space in the University YMCA, 1001 S. Wright St., room 121-- just off of the first floor cafe area. All are welcome, and we'll have some light snacks. Flyer attached to this email. Feel free to bring your lunch!

  • National Disability Day of Mourning Vigil

As part of National Disability Day of Mourning, Social Justice and Leadership Education intern Kathleen Downes, the Women’s Resources Center, and a team of people fighting for disability justice at the University of Illinois will hold a vigil on March 1 from 6-8pm to honor people with disabilities murdered by family members and caregivers. It will be held in 2050 SDRP. The event is wheelchair accessible and all are welcome. We will be reading the names of the victims, voicing our grief, and fighting for the day that there no more names on the list of the dead. The Autistic Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) has compiled a list of more than 950 such murders that have occurred over the last 38 years, though the number is likely higher than that which is reported.

In hosting this event at the University of Illinois, we seek to send the message that disabled lives are worth living and that disability is not a justification for violence. Please join us in celebrating the lives of the victims and telling our community and the world that these crimes must end. Violence against people with disabilities and damaging cultural attitudes that justify it are not acceptable. Please contact Kathleen Downes at kdownes2@illinois.edu for further information or to help plan the event.
