The Illinois State Geological Survey is seeking a Geological Collections Assistant to participate in geological core samples management, digitization, and data preservation. Position is based in Champaign, Illinois.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Analyze and interpret drill core geology.
- Perform quality assurance/quality control through plotting and reviewing data and reports.
- Conduct fieldwork in support of samples library research, sample collection, and sample management. Fieldwork will occur in both rural and urban settings, some of which may be under adverse conditions (e.g., inclement weather, remoteness, and moderate physical exertion), may include overnight travel, and lifting and manipulating field equipment and other items weighing up to 50 pounds over uneven terrain.
- Ensure the safety of staff and equipment.
- Inspect subsurface samples, ensuring proper orientation and ordering
- Clean samples and repair boxes.
- Generate clear and accurate stratigraphic markers where needed
- Participate in sample photo-documentation and digital curation activities. Assist with sample transport and shelving.
- Cut and polish samples for use in geologic and critical minerals research. Assist with sample shipping.
- Provide technical expertise to staff, government agencies, academia, industry, and the general public.
- Provide technical content for project reports and scientific articles.
- Perform other duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of the Geological Survey and the Prairie Research Institute.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in geology or related discipline. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position.
- Field and laboratory experience.
- Experience with geological archived collections is preferred.
- Knowledge of standard laboratory procedures and safety protocols.
- Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, teamwork, and leadership skills.
- Demonstrated ability to perform effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment consisting of multiple dynamic priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision.
- Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills.
- Affinity for cooperative or interdisciplinary research with scientists at the Survey, professionals at other Surveys or other academic units, as well as governmental and other academic institutions.
- Proficiency in commonly employed software, databases, and project management tools.
- Valid driver’s license.
Work up to 40 hours per week at $17 per hour.
