The Illinois State Archaeological Survey (ISAS) is part of the Prairie Research Institute at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, which is centrally located between Chicago, St. Louis, and Indianapolis. ISAS is seeking to hire a Scientific Specialist, Archaeology to assist with all levels of compliance projects including background research, map production, fieldwork, artifact analysis, and report writing for Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and Forest Preserve of Cook County (FPCC) archaeological projects.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Research – Fieldwork/Data Collection
- Participate in or lead field work in compliance with state and federal laws and guidelines, including reconnaissance surveys, testing and mitigation project.
- Locate and document archaeological sites using topographic maps, field sketch maps, and GIS technology.
- Provide basic cultural identification, description, and interpretation of archaeological materials.
- Co-author or author archaeological short reports and technical reports in compliance with state and federal laws and guidelines.
- Ensure the safety of staff and equipment.
Research – Data Analysis/Interpretation
- Create maps using ArcGIS pro for use in fieldwork and reports.
- Clean, prepare, and catalog archaeological materials.
- Data entry.
- Gather archival, cartographic, geophysical, and geographic information relevant to site investigations and/or project areas.
- Assist with the proper handling, identification, quantification, and recordation of archaeological artifacts, and faunal, botanical, soil, and specialized samples.
- Assist supervisory personnel with inventory descriptions, and the completion of forms and production of reports.
- Assist with proper curation of artifacts for both ISAS and the Illinois State Museum.
Outreach and Other
- Participate in public outreach and other educational events and professional conferences.
- Keep abreast of developments in this discipline.
- Perform other related duties as needed in order to further the mission and goals of the Survey, PRI, and University.
Position Requirements and Qualifications:
Education and Experience:
Required: Bachelor’s degree in anthropology, archaeology, history, American Indian or Native American Studies, or closely related field. Alternate degree fields will be considered/accepted depending on the nature and depth of the experience as it relates to this position. Demonstrated experience in processing, identifying, and cataloging artifacts. Demonstrated experience in map production. Demonstrated experience in preparation of Archaeological Survey Short Reports. Valid driver’s license.
Preferred: 1-3 years fieldwork experience in Illinois. Minimum of 1 year of archaeological fieldwork experience in the Midwest or southeastern US assisting Section 106 compliance projects. Experience in analysis of cultural material and archival research. Experience with Phase II-III data recovery projects in the Midwest or southeastern United States. Experience with outreach to the public and stakeholder communities. Membership in state or regional professional organizations such as the Illinois Archaeological Survey. Midwest Archaeological Conference or Southeastern Archaeological Conference.
Knowledge Requirements:
Required: Ability to make appropriate decisions involving proper handling, recognition, identification, and interpretation of archaeological materials in the field and lab. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, and teamwork skills. Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a diverse and fast-paced work environment of multiple and changing priorities with stringent deadlines, under minimal supervision. Strong organizational and interpersonal skills. Attention to detail, sound judgment, and strong conflict resolution skills. Proficiency in commonly employed software and databases including Microsoft Office Suite, Adobe Acrobat, Adobe Creative Cloud, and ArcGISPro.
Preferred: Familiarity with Illinois archaeology. Familiarity with federal and state of Illinois historic preservation policies, burial laws, and regulations. Familiarity with federal Section 106 and state 707 compliance review procedures and NRHP eligibility criteria.
Environmental Demands:
Work is conducted in both office and field settings. Fieldwork will require working in adverse conditions (inclement weather, biting insects, remoteness) and occasional travel (including driving to and from research sites) throughout the state of Illinois in both rural and urban settings. Will require overnight travel for up to one work week at a time. Will require operating, lifting, and manipulating field equipment and other items over uneven terrain weighing up to 50 pounds.
Appointment Information:
This is a full-time academic professional appointment. The budgeted amount for this position is $40,000 to $50,000. The salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the full range for a position.
