Prairie Research Institute - Undergraduate Hourly/Graduate Hourly: Student Assistant
The Prairie Research Institute is seeking a motivated, resourceful, and mechanically inclined undergraduate or graduate hourly student to join our team. Student needed to provide assistance to the Research Shop Supervisor and Equipment Specialist III in support of PRI staff and research activities. Duties include:
- Assist with moving scientific equipment and other items.
- Shuttle PRI fleet vehicles scheduled for maintenance or repair to and from local automotive shops.
- Shuttle equipment and vehicles to field sites.
- Perform routine maintenance and repair on machines, motors, and scientific equipment under supervision.
- Perform other duties in order to further the mission and goals of the Surveys, PRI, and the University of Illinois.
Licenses Required: Valid driver’s license.
Knowledge Requirements: Knowledge of basic mechanical principles. Basic mechanical ability. Working knowledge of tools and machines. Working knowledge of safety procedures. Ability to follow, read, listen to, and understand instructions. Effective communication, personal relations, collaboration, organizational, and teamwork skills.
Environmental Demands: The work of this position takes place in a garage, shop and field settings. Position involves performing physical activities that require considerable use of arms, hands, and legs including lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds, and handling equipment and materials weighing up to 100 pounds with exposure to grease, gas fumes, loud noise, and other adverse conditions. Incumbent will use personal protective equipment when needed.
