The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking 3 field technicians to conduct research on the behavior and habitat use of wild turkeys in Illinois. Primary responsibilities will include trapping, radio-tagging, tracking wild turkeys, and remotely downloading data from their transmitters. All positions will have a start date of on or around January 10, 2025.
Two positions will have an end date of April 11, 2025, with the possibility of a 1–3-month extension if a business need is present.
One position will have an end date of June 30th, 2025, and will have additional responsibilities including but not limited to evaluating turkey transmitter data for incubation activity, assessing nest fate, conducting vegetation surveys, nocturnal bird surveys, conducting camera trapping surveys for mesocarnivores, data entry, and contacting private landowners to obtain access for research activities
Qualifications
Must have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in wildlife Ecology, Natural Resources, Zoology, or related field. Alternate degree fields may be considered depending on the nature and depth of experience as it relates to this position. Must have an interest in wildlife ecology and conservation, ability to work independently and as a part of a team, willingness to work early mornings and possible weekends, ability to lift 50lbs, ability to drive 4X4 vehicles, and must be capable of conducting fieldwork under adverse conditions. Position will require working in adverse field conditions (heat, humidity, biting insects, etc.), and walking several miles while carrying equipment over uneven terrain. Must have a valid driver’s license.
Preference will be given to applicants who have previous experience in radiotelemetry and handling wildlife (particularly turkeys), and who are proficient with computer programs (GIS, Google Products, Office Products), and GPS units or orienteering with phone apps.
Salary: The salary range is $15 - $18 per hour, depending on experience; up to 40 hours per week. The estimated start date is January 10, 2025. Housing and field vehicles are provided. Shared housing will be located near Shelbyville, Illinois, which is approximately 30 minutes to an hour away from field sites.
