IP Address Management service announcements and updates.

blog posts

  • SSO Login maintenance: Nov 30, 2021

On Tuesday, November 30 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be patched with a software hotfix from the vendor, and SSO Login via Shibboleth will be re-enabled.

    (see full post for details)

  • SSO Login disabled (again)

Please use the Alternative Login Method with your full Active Directory userPrincipalName (typically yournetid@illinois.edu) and 2FA.

You may need to append a passcode or factor name to your password for 2FA purposes; see go.illinois.edu/ipamlogin for more information, and contact hostmgr if you still have trouble logging in.

    (see full post for details)

  • SSO Login disabled

Please continue to use the Alternative Login Method, making sure to provide your full Active Directory userPrincipalName (typically yournetid@illinois.edu).

    (see full post for details)

  • New Read Permissions

On Thu Aug 24, additional read-only permissions will be granted to the default role for all IPAM users.  No service impact is expected.

    (see full post for details)

  • Known Issue with CSV Import

When using the CSV Import mechanism to add or modify Host records, your DNS changes may not propagate from IPAM to the main nameservers dns1.illinois.edu and dns2.illinois.edu. A workaround is available; please see Known Issues for details. This bug has been reported to the vendor.

  • IPAM Upgrade: Oct 4, 2016

On Tue Oct 4 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (7.2.12).

Important Reminder for Perl API (PAPI) Users

After the upgrade, you will need to update your installation of the Infoblox PAPI perl modules on any client systems from which you run PAPI scripts.  Do not apply this change to a production environment ahead of time, as the modules are not backward-compatible.

RESTful Web API (WAPI) users do not need to take any action.

  • IPAM Upgrade: Oct 24, 2023

On Tuesday, October 24 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (8.6.3).

    (see full post for details)

  • IPAM Upgrade: March 24, 2016

On Thu Mar 24 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (7.2.7).

Important Reminder for Perl API (PAPI) Users

After the upgrade, you will need to update your installation of the Infoblox PAPI perl modules on any client systems from which you run PAPI scripts.  Do not apply this change to a production environment ahead of time, as the modules are not backward-compatible.

  • IPAM Upgrade: July 5, 2018

On Thu Jul 5 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (8.2.6).

    (see full post for details)

Important Reminder for Legacy Perl-only API (PAPI) Users

After the upgrade, you will need to update your installation of the Infoblox PAPI perl modules on any client systems from which you run PAPI scripts.  Do not apply this change to a production environment ahead of time, as the modules are not backward-compatible.

RESTful Web API (WAPI) users do not need to take any action; previously advertised WAPI versions (1.4.2, 2.2.2) are still supported by the new software release.

  • IPAM Upgrade: July 24, 2014

On Thu Jul 24, 2014 between 10:00pm-12:00 midnight, the production Infoblox grid for the campus IPAM (DNS and DHCP) service will be upgraded from its current software version (6.5.0) to the latest release from the vendor (6.10.6).

    Important Reminder for API Users

After the upgrade date, you will need to update your installation of the Infoblox API perl modules on any client systems that you use to run Infoblox API scripts against the production grid. Note that this upgrade cannot be applied to your production environments ahead of time; see the service documentation (http://www.cites.illinois.edu/ipam/api.html) for further explanation.

  • IPAM Upgrade: Jul 13, 2021

On Tuesday, July 13 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (8.5.2), and an IPv6 address (2600:1f16:8b2:2e01::53) will be added to dns3.illinois.edu.

    (see full post for details)

  • IPAM Upgrade: Jan 5, 2021

On Tue Jan 5 between 5:00-7:00am, the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be upgraded to a new software release from the vendor (8.5.1).  As part of this upgrade, the login procedures will change, and (unfortunately) your individual GUI personalizations will be lost.

IT Pros who use IPAM should consider taking these action steps before the upgrade:

    1. Log in to the production system at https://ipam.illinois.edu/ and take notes and/or screenshots of any individual GUI personalizations that are important to you, so that you can more easily recreate them after the upgrade.

    2. Test your access to https://dev.ipam.illinois.edu/ using "SSO Login" (note: you may need VPN for this test since the dev system is not reachable from off-campus).

    3. If you use the IPAM API, test your access to the dev system's API.

    4. Contact hostmgr if you encounter any problems.

  • IPAM Training Sessions

    As previously announced (http://illinois.edu/blog/view/786/74771), campus
DNS will be migrating to the new integrated IPAM ("IP Address Management")
platform on Saturday, June 23 2012.

CITES will offer the first of three hands-on IPAM training workshop
sessions at the IT Pro Forum on June 7th. If you would like to attend this
session, be sure to register for IT Pro Forum by 5PM today at
    http://itproforum.illinois.edu/2012Spring/registration.php and choose the
1:30PM session titled "Integrated DNS and DHCP with the new IP Address
    Management (IPAM) Appliance".

Because the IT Pro Forum session is limited to 50 participants, we have
scheduled two additional training sessions which we are announcing now in
    order to help you plan.

  • ipam2 AWS migration and other maintenance

During February 2021, several members of the production IP Address Management appliance grid will be refreshed in-place with new hardware, and the geo-redundant backup grid manager appliance (used in disaster recovery scenarios and some planned maintenance scenarios, including this one) will migrate from University of Illinois IP space to a public IP in AWS.

Action required: IT Pros should ensure that their use of ipam.illinois.edu (via the GUI or the API) to make DNS and DHCP configuration changes is always from a system which has outbound Internet access.

    (see full post for details)

  • Integrated IPAM Announcement

CITES Networking is pleased to announce that on Saturday, June 23, we will be migrating campus DNS to our new integrated IPAM ("IP Address Management") platform. It's finally here: our new platform will serve as the one-stop-shop for all DNS and DHCP self-service configuration.

  • Immediate Fixed Addresses feature

On Thu Jun 22, we will be temporarily re-enabling the "Immediate Fixed Addresses" feature which is known to cause some long-term instability for the DHCP service. It is anticipated that sometime after this (possibly weeks later), one or both of the main campus DHCP servers will experience a crash event (in the worst case causing a 30-minute outage), after which we will disable the feature again to restore full stability. The goal is to provide the vendor with diagnostic information that they can use to implement a fix, so that we will eventually be able to re-enable the feature long-term.

    (see full post for details)

  • DNS over HTTPS

Mozilla has announced plans to begin enabling DNS over HTTPS by default for a small percentage of Firefox users in the USA, "starting in late September." This is motivated by a desire to improve consumer privacy on untrusted networks, but could negatively impact people on the University of Illinois campus network, so Technology Services is taking action to avoid impairing the default user experience.

    (see full post for details)

  • DNS Migration Update: What's New

CITES Networking is pleased to announce that the DNS migration is now complete and campus DNS is now running on our new IPAM ("IP Address Management") platform.

  • dns3 IPv6 address change: Aug 16, 2023

On Wed Aug 16, the IPv6 address of dns3.illinois.edu will change.  No action is required except for a very few customers who have already been notified separately.

    (see full post for details)

  • DHCP Poster Session at the IT Pro Forum

Stop by our poster session at the IT Pro Forum event on June 7, 2011.

  • dev.ipam Preview Upgrade: Nov 16, 2020

The development IP Address Management appliance grid at https://dev.ipam.illinois.edu/ has been upgraded to a new software release from the vendor, and the login procedure has changed.

    (see full post for details)

  • Dev IPAM Grid

The development IPAM grid, formerly located at ipam-dev.illinois.edu, will be down for the next several days to facilitate a hardware transition.  When it returns, it will have a new hostname: https://dev.ipam.illinois.edu

  • Campus IPAM Upgrade: August 21, 2012

On Tue Aug 21, 2012 between 5:00-7:00am, the production Infoblox grid for the campus IPAM (DNS and DHCP) service will be upgraded from its current software version (6.4.2) to the latest release from the vendor (6.5.0).

  • Campus DHCP Upgrade: March 13, 2012

On Tue Mar 13, 2012 between 5:30-7:00am, the production Infoblox grid for the campus DHCP service will be upgraded from its current software version (6.1.3) to the latest release from the vendor (6.3.3).

  • Campus DHCP Beta Offering

The CITES campus DHCP service is now available to all departments as a beta offering.

  • Best Practice for Stand-alone CNAME Records

We have recently updated the IPAM service documentation to reflect a new best practice recommendation for deciding between Host Aliases and stand-alone CNAME records.

  • Automatic renewal of non-.edu domains

Effective immediately, non-.edu DNS domains registered through CITES will be automatically renewed by the registrar 60-90 days before they are scheduled to expire.  The Primary and Administrative domain contacts will receive a notification email prior to each auto-renewal, but will not need to respond affirmatively in order for the auto-renewal to proceed.

If you do NOT wish to renew a domain, you must notify hostmgr NO LESS THAN 91 DAYS PRIOR TO ITS EXPIRATION DATE (or sooner if that deadline would fall on a non-business day) to ensure that the change can be processed before the next auto-renewal occurs.

Transitional note: for non-.edu domains currently scheduled to expire before Mar 2, 2015, you must notify hostmgr no later than Dec 1, 2014 if you do not wish to renew these domains.  Individual reminder notices for these domains will be sent out within the next week.

  • Authoritative DNS Transition

In the coming weeks, the authoritative DNS nameservers dns1.illinois.edu, dns2.illinois.edu, and dns3.illinois.edu will be migrated from commodity GNU/Linux servers running ISC BIND to new Infoblox appliances. In addition, the IPv4 address of dns3.illinois.edu will change from 204.93.1.5 to 3.16.92.183, a new IPv6 address (2620:0:e00:c::53) will be added to dns2.illinois.edu, and the default record TTL in IPAM will change from 7200 (2 hours) to 3600 (1 hour).

No customer action is required as a result of these changes, and there will be no interruption to DNS service as a whole.

    (see full post for details)

  • Authoritative DNS Improvements: update

As of today, the transition announced in the previous post (Authoritative DNS Improvements) is complete: dns3.illinois.edu has replaced dns1.iu.edu as our off-site authoritative nameserver (in case of an Urbana campus outage), and our authoritative zones have been removed from dns1.iu.edu.

  • Authoritative DNS Improvements

CITES Networking is pleased to announce two upcoming changes to our authoritative DNS infrastructure: dns3.illinois.edu will replace dns1.iu.edu as our off-site authoritative nameserver (in case of an Urbana campus outage), and IPv6 addresses will be added to our authoritative nameservers dns1.illinois.edu and dns2.illinois.edu.

For most customers, no action is required. However, action will be required for IT Pros who maintain slaved delegation zones.

  • Accepting Alpha customers for the Campus DHCP service

We are pleased to announce that we are now officially accepting Alpha customers for the campus DHCP service!
